From what I noticed when we were looking around, the Flagstaff would be the GMC of the two...

From what I have read here on this forum, they run down the same line when built.

If you want the best built unit, don't buy a Rockwood/Flagstaff lightweight. Everything is lightweight, the walls, floor, frame, axles, tires, EVERYTHING!

That statement is NOT fair. There are many people who have purchased Rockwood and Flagstaff ultralight models and are completely satisfied. If you're so unhappy with yours, I suggest you trade it in and buy something you feel is superior.

Good point.

No issues with the construction of the 2 Rockwoods we've had.

While I would be upset at someone calling Grey Wolf units effectively crap for being lightweight, in the same thought I can understand Don's point. Lightweight TT's are made to be light, so no solid wood cabinetry, nor hard surface countertops, or plush Serta 16" matresses. These things add weight. The extra light and lightweight TTs are purpose built, and you have to understand that going into them. Does this mean "don't buy them"? Of course not. Just don't expect them to be super luxurious.

I liked the look of the Salem Hemisphere's, but from what I saw at the RV convention this winter/spring, unless you are looking at the Aviator line, forest TT's are not as luxury on finish as the 5ers. The Cardinal, Columbus, Ceder Creek and Blue Ridge were beautiful units. This is because you are probably already expecting more weight with a 5er, so they don't worry quite as much with the options. They expect you to have a deisel or large gasser 3/4T+ truck and that you plan on having more weight.

The Rockwood and Flagstaff are fine units. You just have to understand their design and place in the market...

Thanks Dave, this our third year with our Flagstaff 8528RLWS with no problems. We hauled it from Victoria BC to Charolottetown PEI and back to Calgary AB through the northern US in 2010. In 2011 numerous weekends in southern Alberta and two or three trips to the west coast. So far this year, one weekend at Bow Valley Park west of Calgary and now back on Vancouver Island for a month before going to Washington state and back to Calgary. Have been over lots of bad roads with no trouble. We love the solid wood cabinets. This is called a 'classic super lite' fifth wheel and weighs in at just over 9000 lbs. loaded. Light maybe, but tows like a dream.

Thanks for letting me rant

Ray

I have a Rockwood 2011 8285 WS-----------

I am satisfied with my Rockwood 100%. I would purchase again. I have owned both Flagstaff & Rockwood, got good service out of both. hard to understand some people comments about the Rockwood or Flagstaff units.
For the $$$$ and quality a good buy.

Some dogs bark at what they don't see!

looks like if I want solid and luxury, I might be better getting a conventionally built TT?
I like the idea of having a larger TT but I would then need a larger TV which I'm not in the market for....we'll see how this first RV summer goes
thanks for all the replies

From what I have been told and have seen in the past, the best built TT is an Airstream. However, it certainly doesn't fit my bank account.

boubou, there are always trade-offs. When we were shopping for a new camper, we wanted the largest one in a floor plan we liked, but in a lightweight package. That turned out to be the Flagstaff/Rockwood line. We would have bought a Cougar if they had the same floor plan, as they are built a bit sturdier. But the Flagstaff/Rockwoods were a close second, and they had the exact floor plan we wanted.
Actually, Sabre also makes a very nice unit, and is built quite strong. You might want to check them out.
It all depends on your price point. I saw an awesome fifth wheel at the dealer where we bought ours, but it was $75,000!

As Quick Draw McGraw used to say "Hooooold on thar, them's fightin'
words"!

I donno where you got your information but I'm happy with MY
Rockwood Ultralite. Had it 4 years with no more than "normal" issues
of minor plumbing leak here and there. No frame, tires, axle issues and
no weather related water leaks.

And my loaded with gear, half tank of water, full LP and food ready to
go camping weight is 4800 at the truck scales. (That's gross including
tongue weight.)
I haul a 450 LB motorcycle and pull the trailer with a little gas V8.

Check my "states visited" map. We don't leave it just sitting in the
drive way, it get's used!

While camping near the north rim of Grand Canyon 2 years ago a little
single axle air stream pulled in and parked across from us.
After he got set up I moseyed over there and chatted.
I noticed his wheel well trim was all torn up.

I asked and he said he'd had blow outs on both sides. Apparently it came
from the factory with under size tires. He'd had to buy higher load capacity
tires while on the road.
Not how I want to spend a day of MY vacation!

I'm thinking Airstream are nice trailers but they used to have issues
with leaks and are a bit on the heavy side for their size.
I'm not saying I wouldn't have one but as you say, they are a bit on the
pricey side.

KyDan, the OP asked what were the best built, and while the fit and finish on the Rockwood/Flagstaffs is excellent, they are not built as strong as one that weighs more.
The frames are not real I-beams, but manufactured out of three pieces of light metal. They are only as strong as the welds, and simply cannot be as strong as a real I-beam. And they aren't very big either.
The walls are only 1 inch thick, which is pretty thin when you compare it to many at twice the thickness. That means less structural strength and less insulation, which means it is harder to keep cool on those hot days.
There are no roof rafters, and the strength is totally dependant on the glued laminate structure. If the foam was cracked from someone not being careful on the roof, the strength of the roof would be compromised.
The lack of real plywood on the floor has resulted in some reports of "soft" floors, as the foam underneath the very thin "plywood" gets crushed over time.
These are all facts that no one can deny, but are also part of buying a very lightweight camper.
And we own one, so I have the right to comment.
We also really like our Flagstaff, and get many compliments on it. But I also know the drawbacks.
Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings by being honest.

For everyone here an FYI.

Making an open ended opinion statement similar to the "original one" thrown into the mix to see what happens is called "Trolling." It is not allowed on the forum.

His follow up was a much better example of how to express an opinion and is just fine. Our job, as staff, is to "moderate" the forum and try to keep a lid on tightly held opinions and keep things from getting out of control.

Some take exception to vulgarity, so what may be acceptable language on other forums is discouraged here.

We are agressive because once the ball gets rolling it is amazing how fast it gets to 7 alarm status. By the time a Moderator gets notified sometimes there are 10 or 15 posts of increasing "heat."

Please take a minute and re-read (or read for the first time) the forum FAQ on posting rules.
