Rv share?

Please delete if not allowed
Has anyone ever done the rv share thing?
I got on the page last night and it looks like it could be a good thing. Yes you have more wear and tear but have the chances of paying of your rv in year. Anyone have any experiences to talk about?

When I bought my Class A we kept the Class C and rented it on RV Share for about 3 months. I had so many requests to rent it that I could barely keep up. My wife said the wear and tear on the RV was noticeable in the 3 months we rented it. I charged extra for dumping and water and cleaning but it was still a ton of work. You will make money if you price it right and have a desirable RV. I made several thousand in just a few months. You will get people that want it for just a weekend which is a pain because its the same amount of work for you than for people that want it for longer periods. Then there is the constant worrying about what if something goes wrong. The renters will also call you to ask how to do this or how to do that. I never had anything break or damaged but I've heard nightmares about trying to get their insurance to pay up. Most people that rent you need to spend 30 minutes to an hour with just to get them up to speed on how to use the RV. If you are willing to commit to all of that and take the risk of damage or issues then you can make a considerable amount of money. After 3 months I just didn't think it was worth the effort so I was lucky and was able to sell my RV pretty quickly and now we just have the Class A that we use and do not rent out. I would not do it again. For me the money you make is not worth the risk, work, and wear and tear on the RV. The other issue is everyone wants to rent the RV's on the same weekeends that were the ones that we wanted to go on vacation. Usually holidays or long weekends so meeting them to give them the RV and then meeting them to return the RV was time consuming and impacted our vacations or down time.

We rented one this summer from outdoorsy.co which is the same thing. Unless you are capable of fixing everything in the rv on your own, I wouldn't recommend it. RV's break with experienced owners, they break more often with people that have never used an rv before.

The guy we rented from had a renter forget to check the oil in the generator. You can guess how that ended up.

After owning rental duplexes for years we finally sold them and retired.

I would never want to put an RV that I owned through that.
There is just too darn much that can be damaged or ruined.
IMO... these RV's today are not made to take any abuse or hard wear.

After seeing first hand how people that rent vacation cottages tear them up I would NEVER rent out an RV. Also insurance cost would probably be astronomical or non existent, if you do not have the right coverage.........

This question is asked quite often, on various RV forums.
Probably 90% of those that did it, regretted it.

It depends on where you are with your RV as well. We didn't owe any money and we had another RV that we did use and did not rent out. It was just too much work. They aren't lying when they say you can make 10-30k a year doing it. I was on pace to make about 15k I just didn't want to deal with the hassle and risk.

I think anyone thinking of renting out their RV should watch the movie RV. That type of customer is out there. Do you want to take the risk?

Rental income from your RV is taxable. It may also be considered a business and as such may have additional local taxes.
Check with your insurance company to see if it is covered by your policy.

It is taxable and we told our accountant about it so he can report the income. You can deduct costs for maintenance and storage too since it is a business. Your insurance doesn't cover issues. All of the websites like RV Share, Outdoorsy offer their own insurance that you sign up for.
