Slideout awnings?
Are the slide-out awnings a good or bad idea? Do they flop in the wind and rain? The question I have should I order them or not on our 8280WS? Thank you

I have an awning on our slide out (not a very large slide, 6 feet X 4 feet maybe)and I think it was worth the extra money. I haven't noticed any noise from wind or rain that I can say.

Slide out awnings, By all means.
I will be ordering the same RV you have with a slide out in the living area and bedroom. Done a lot of research. You can bet your BIPPY mine will have the awnings from the factory. I understand, the awnings help the AC
to not have to work so hard. Has to assist in heat protection!!

I have 3 slideouts and all 3 have awnings.
The awning over the sofa bed makes that bed the quietest in a rain storm. The master bedroom sounds like being in a 55 gallon drum.
The awning keeps the slide roof clean and dry when retracting when we break camp. Water and leaves do not pool on the roof and get sucked into the camper.

yes get toppers, I have them on my slides, really helps with the florida sun. the only thing is during rain storms you will either have to keep a small child's ball under them or tip you trailer as the water build up will pull them off

We got caught in a freak snowstorm on Columbus Day weekend last year in Allegany State Park. Had about 8" of wet, heavy snow fall. Made me very glad I didn't have a slide topper...would have had to camp with the slide in!

I have them on our 2902ss, keeps the slide out clean and cooler. One time we were camping the the seashore and the winds made the covers billow up.

Good tip. Inflatable balls for snow emergencies.

Good thread ... I have often wondered if I should get an awning for my slide. I do not have one and so far I don't have any problems. How expensive are they?

Slide out toppers are a good thing to have and they help a lot as mention above. Toppers should be firm went the slide out is open, if you notice any sag then it needs adjustment, it will hold water if your camper is completly level. If you have one installed on your camper make sure you check it out before you leave the dealer, and if you are buying a new camper this does not mean it is adjusted correctly. I have seen new campers on the dealers lots with the slide outs open and the toppers are sagging.
If you look at an awning on a camper then relate that to the slide out topper so that you can inspect both of them.

I have an awning on my single slide, and am glad that it is there for the purpose of keeping crud off the top of the slide. That said, it is one more awning fabric to keep clean.

I paid 150 dollars per slide when I ordered it. I really have no idea if that was a deal or a bone job.

How'd you get the snow off before closing the slideout?

Our previous TT had a couch slide. I was able to broom the snow off from a step ladder. I normally check the top of the slide from the rear ladder and go up on the roof if there's anything to clear.

3 trailers never had them, never missed them, will never buy them.
Takes 2 minutes to sweep debris if any off slide roof. Perhaps once I am unable to climb ladder to get to roof I may reconsider

Never had awnings on my slideouts until I got my new 2010 829RGSS. I used to always admire the idea when at RV shows or browsing RVs at Camping World and I thought that was a nice feature on my latest purchase.
I'm amazed a bit that there may be a downside...but not sure they are absolutely necessary or worth the expense if one's rig doesn't come with them. But I'm not going to take mine off that's for sure! I like not having to pick up leaves inside my TT...

Three trailers and have had slide awnings on two; and will install a slide awning on our present trailer. The slide awning(topper) keeps the slide room cooler in hot weather and helps keep debris off of slide room roof.
Living in the deep south, I must ask, what is snow?

Definitely order them. Too many benefits to list.
The only problem, as mentioned before, is the topper for the superslide will hold water. But just today I made a support that totally eliminates the issue. I cut a 6-inch by 6-foot strip out of a sheet of styrofoam insulation, carving a slight arch in the center. I slipped it under the awning, pushing it as far as I could reach until it was centered. The tension of the awning holds it in place. The arch in the support moves the water to the ends of the awning before it can even begin to pool. Problem solved for a couple of bucks.

NOW I KNOW where to stash their silly balls when not in use! They've been in the cabin - because they are so light - for travel, but always seem to be in the way!
