Slider hitch needed?

We are about to get a new fifth wheel. The salesman and the brochure literature claim that it's not needed due to the front cap design that is made for short beds. Do I need one or not? Anyone have a fifth wheel with the cap that claims "short bed" friendly and tow without a slider?

I was advised I may never need a slider, however I elected to install one. I would much rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

That was my thought as well. But, if I never need it why pay the extra $$?

I figured if I never needed it great, however if I ever got into a situation whether it was due to terrain, severe backing angle or anything which might cause a severe angle I would have the ability to prevent any damage to my 5th wheel and truck. Just my way of thinking.

This my question about a slider. I have a 2014 GMC 2500 with a 6'6" box and can jack it to 88 degrees with my Wildcat 327ck. But my last trip to our cottage I was pulling uphill and turning onto the road, the 5er corner touched and pushed the corner into the front edge of the box. It's a small wrinkle on the top of the box and the tonneau covers it. It was caused because of the terrain but something to think about.

I just traded my short bed 3/4 ton for a long bed 1 ton last month. I used my B&W Companion slider once this year. It was worth every penny. To each his own though.

We have a new Sabre 33CKTS and I put a slider in my Ram with the 6'6" box. Haven't used it yet but have come close to the cab a couple of times. It wasn't that much extra so I have it if I need it.

I have a V-Cross and have a slider hitch. Have never used the slider but someday if I upgrade, maybe I will.

There are many threads on this where this has been discussed. My experience after talking to people with at least a 6'6" bed they never use their slider or needed one. I don't have one and never needed one with my FF TW combination. Not only the cost of a sliders is a consideration but you do a times get a clunking sound when you start and stop when you have a slider. But if you trailer has cut corners and you have a 6'6" bed you will never need it.

If you are towing a bumper pull you could not get 90 degrees and yet people have somehow survived to camp another day...

I think the rule is...

Half the width of the tailer+4 inches distance from cab.

I didn't have a slide...first trip out got the cab. I have really only needed it once since. Worth the money to me.

I am confused, my slider hitch is automatic and slides back on every turn I make,it's more than a 90° turn into my driveway since I have to swing it into the other lane, it paid for itself first trip imo.

No they are not all automatic. There is a manual slider which I have in my 2014 Ram 2500. We have a Chaparral 5er with the front cap designed for short bed trucks. To date have never used the slider but it is good to have it just in case.

No they're not. I had a Pullrite Superglide in a previous TV (F350 SB)/5th wheel. They are not cheap, but they are fully automatic and move the hitch to the rear of the truck bed when the truck and trailer are not in a straight line. Once the truck and trailer return to a straight line, the hitch moves forward toward the cab.

The problem with non-automatic sliders is that when you need them the most you're probably in a high stress situation already and are more likely to forget to activate the slide. I honestly don't know if my Pullrite ever prevented damage because it always works every time. That peace of mind was worth the cost to me. IMO, you invest $100K +/- in the truck and trailer, so $2k for the hitch is cheap.

I bought my superglide off craiglist for 500 , it included everything except the bolts and it looked almost brand new, seems their are lots of superglides in my area for sale between 500 and 750.oo
