Surveyor Furrion Camera Installation
This is important information for those of you who wish to install a Furrion Observation/Backup Camera in the preinstalled bracket!! Knowing this bit of information will save you a lot of headaches. I tried to install my new Furrion Observation Camera on our new 265RLDS Trailer. Everything in the installations and the internet says it's prewired into the clearance lights. After spending a whole Sunday afternoon trying to get it to work, I stopped and called Forest River Customer Service the next workday. Per Surveyor Customer Service, at Forest River, the bracket is prewired into the backup lights, not the clearance lights. Now this is great if you're only use a backup camera. Totally useless if your using an Observation Camera/Backup Camera!! Unless your backing down the road at 70 mph!! LOL Here's the tried and proven solution!!
CAUTION!!!
This should not be performed be anyone with no knowledge of electrical wiring. If so, let your dealership service department install it for you.
FIRST STEP!!
Confirmation that the camera is wired into the backup lights is easy!! Pull close to your trailer and attach your tow vehicle to your trailer, wiring only, no need to hook up the hitch. Install and pair your camera per manufacturer instructions and see if it works with the clearance lights on. If it doesn't, set the parking brake and put the tow vehicle in reverse. If the camera works, when you put your tow vehicle in reverse, then the camera is prewired into the backup lights. Leave as wired if you're only going to use it for backing up!! Or follow the instructions below if you want to use the Furrion Observation/Backup Camera.
GET'R'DONE
First of all, disconnect your camper from any tow vehicle, any power source and disconnect the auxiliary batteries. Remove the preinstalled Furrion bracket and the clearance light directly above it. (Note: Observe how the camera lead is routed through the camera bracket for reinstallation). Pull the camera lead out and cut it loose from the wire it is attached to, this should be the backup wire. Be sure the wire end you removed it from is properly secured and insulated, place it back inside the wall behind the Fiberglass outer skin. Fish the camera lead up through the rear wall, behind the fiberglass outer skin, and pull it out the hole left when you removed the clearance light. Reinstall the Furrion Bracket. You only need a short pigtail inside the Furrion Bracket to attach the camera to so you might have to cut the excess wire off when it was installed at the factory. Observing correct polarity, using your preferred method, attach the camera leads to clearance light wires making sure everything is taped and insulated. Reinstall the clearance light, reconnect all previously disconnected wires and restore functionality to your trailer. As you did previously, connect your trailer wiring to the tow vehicle. Turn on your trailer clearance lights, turn on you camera display, pairing of the camera and display is automatic and it should work. If not, recheck all your connections. When your camera is functional, be sure to reseal the clearance light and camera bracket with appropriate caulking. GOOD LUCK
