I wouldn't believe a word a dealer says until I looked it up myself. Not all 1/2 tons are created equal. Look up the tow capacity of your exact model of truck with all the accessories that your exact truck has. Then you'll know for sure. This should be in your owners manual (it is for my Silverados - don't know about Ram).

Also, dry weights are for suckers. Use the GVWR on the left front side of the trailer. Assume 15% of that for the tongue weight. Your payload limit should be on a sticker on your drivers door frame.

On the mark with this post. Well said.

In this case the dealer is correct. The tow capacity of the truck described by the OP is 10,390. That means it can tow that much, but no more, at any truck weight up to 6,900. If the truck weighs more than that then all bets are off. We don't know and Ram will never publish any info about what any limit is when the max truck weight limit is exceeded.

OP said his payload was 1642, 10,390 is a stretch.

10,390 is max towing weight. Nothing to do with payload.

There is a unwritten rule for 1/2 tons that you will run out of payload before towing capacity. Safely anyway, there are a few F-150 heavy duty payloads that may.

Probably the same for most vehicles

Most of the time, yes.

Real numbers here for a 1500 express. Cat scale shows 300 pounds remaining payload with 8,000 pound trailer hooked up. Adding 2,300 pounds on the trailer is not going to add 300 pounds to the truck.

But, although within limits I wouldn't want to pull that much weight.

Not sure I agree. If you added 2,300 lbs, and assuming 10% goes to the tongue, that's 230 lbs - not 300 but getting close. If 15% goes to the tongue, that's 345 lbs.

Of course, adding it all in the rear so tongue weight doesn't go up could do nasty things with sway.

I think the WD hitch send some of that 345 pounds to the trailer axles.

So, I've been waiting for a reply about the missing value that reduces the max trailer weight allowed. Been trying for months to get the answer from Ram as to why the approximate real world max trailer weight is in the 9,500-9,800 range.

WDH does not change allowable tongue weights. You weigh it when not attached to the TV.

And BTW, don't forget to add another 50-75 lbs to the tongue weight for the WDH, depending on the model of your choice.

Ya like popcorn, read through this. The hidden subject is who can tow the heaviest trailer and exceed all the manufacturers ratings along with avoiding common sense at the same time. Bragging rights evidently come from being the biggest doomoss on the thread. Read post 98 and the response in post 99, its special!
