Cool upgrade from 15in wheeks to 16in wheels

I have a 2005 Wild Cat 30ft with rear bunk beds.It has 225-78-15 6 lug wheels. I want to upgrade to the 16 in wheels.Has anyone ever done this or will this work.I beleave when loading with water, grocerys all the other things for a extended vacation the 15in tires will over loaded and will be unsafe.

The registration sticker on the side of our trailer shows a 15" spec 6 lug setup as standard, yet the trailer came with 16 inch 235s.

Can it be done? more than likely. The big thing is making sure there is enough distance between the two tires. Mine are around 2 inches apart and I can barely get my scissor chock in there.

Also there will be a noticable height difference which means you may have to re-level your trailer.

Also, the tire size is less critical than the weight rating. In other words don't go by size, go by load rating of the tire. C, D, E ect.

Thank you Mr.Black for your reply. The tires are now 6in apart.I estimated with the 16in tires I looked at they would be 3in apart. The waight rating from 225-75-15 which is about 2300lbs to the 235-85-16 3400lbs would be 0ver 1000lbs of safety gained.

Those 235/85-16's will be 3½" bigger diameter then the 225/75-15's. Be sure to check the clearance on the top of the tires also. You don't want them rubbing, remember they'll be 1¼" closer to the top than the existing tires.

Our 09 Wildcat came with 16 inch wheels and the only thing I see wrong is our cover doesn't fit well on the spare tire. : )

Most likely if you are overloading the tires now, you are overloading the axles. Putting on bigger tires will not solve that problem. Your best bet is to get the unit weighed to see exactly how much weight you are carrying.

Most six lug axles are 6k pounds. Not all I am sure but most are.

If room is available I would absolutly make the switch to 16s providing that I needed tires.

I wouldn't swap out a set that meet the load requirments of the trailer that I have had good luck with, IE no blowouts.

Just a thought, if you are going to 235/85 16 tires with a G rating (110 psi) you are looking at only one tire mfg and thats goodyear. If you find another its more than likely made in china and thats not good.

You are gonna be hard pressed to find a 6 lug 16" 110 PSI wheel. I have never seen one before.

Thank you steave But I found a set at etrailer.com for less than $45.00 each with free shipping.I have them under carport now.I will wait till closer to spring to install tires.I found a local tire dealer that said he would start with the 235/85/16 .If they wont work the he would back down to a smaler size. We think the 225/75/ 16 would be an easy fit but would try the larger size first. I found one who upgraded to 245/75/16.I have the wheels now this spring I will do the tires.

You found a set that will do what? 120 PSI? or 16"? or both?

Anyways if you go with LT tires which many large trailers came with from the factory then a 245 75 16 tire is a perfect match size wise to the standard 235 80 16 ST trailer tire.
