This might be something that's local to NC- what's a "weighted tag"?

I haven't been stopped, but I have a personalized plate and do pay extra for that and for some weight (5000 I think). I did hear that any 1/2 ton truck would be required to get a weighted tag now. My brother in law has a 1500 Chevy and had to get one, and was told it was a new rule. (Speaking of NC laws only)

I guess in NC you have to get a tag on your tow vehicle that says weighted if your pulling a load more than your registration says. The registration has to cover both.

My Tundra weighs 6000. My TT weighs 7500. So my registration says 15000lbs. It's got something to do with the Hwy use tax.

stopped by the DMV to try to figure it out. they were clueless. You do need it for 10,000 lb gvwr on up that much I do know. Our weighted tag is for 10000 lbs (trucks gvwr) but I have been told you can register it for whatever weight you want. The heavier the weighted tag, the more expensive the plate and you can't renew weighted tags online. Some say you need to cover the weight of the truck plus tongue weight/pin weight and others say you need to cover the gross gcwr of both vehicles. It is clear as mud. Also over a certain weight you need a specialized license (class B or a non commercial class a I believe). Also, this is a requirement in at least some other states as well.

I will go look for some of my old threads on other forums about this.

Here we have to register the GVWR if it exceeds 11,000lbs and there is a spot on the TV registration RGVWR (registered GVWR) and your TV's registration cost is based on this number I am registered at 19,000. It is basically highway tax like the big guys pay. This is an arbitrary thing here because there are many around here who have trucks that have never had anything in the box let alone pull anything and they don't have to register any extra weight.

It is another way of taxing you but it's done sneakily and shows as a fee but lets face it a spade is a spade not a shovel.

So, based on that link, it seems that recreation vehicles are exempt in NC. Good to know. Thanks.

I don't think there exempt. It has to include the weight of the camper. In NC.

I agree with cebaker, if you really read through the threads it doesn't look like rv's are exempt in NC.
