What am I missing here?
My question applies to all trucks. If the sticker on the door post indicates a GAWR for the front as 5200lbs and a GAWR for the rear of 6200lbs why is the GVWR for the truck only 10,000lbs.?In my mind it should be a combination of both axles for a total of 11,400lbs.Assuming full fuel , passengers, cargo and pin weight.I know there is most likely a simple answer and that I will regret asking the question.

Close.
the receiver hitch that goes into your bumper hitch, does it require a sleeve to use a two inch receiver?
What I'm getting @ is your gross tow rating may be limited to your tv receiver

Short answer is because the GVWR looks at more than just the axles. Things like the frame and/or unibody aren't factored into GAWR but it is with GVWR.

The answer is it is limited by the weakest component. Whether it is tires, axles etc.

A v5 hitch is only rated to 10,000 lbs.
12,500 with wdh.
I think that's your limiting factor even tho your not using it but rather a 5th wheel hitch.

My Curt V5 2" Receiver hitch is rated for 16K weight carrying, and 17K weight distributing.
Tongue weight is 2400lbs, my truck is less of course.

I'm sorry 12,000 lbs.
But here's the real deal.
I think op must have an Iv hitch.
Class V hitches are weight carrying (WC) and weight distributing (WD) hitches depending on the vehicle and hitch specifications.Class V hitches used as weight carrying are rated up to 12,000 lbs. gross trailer weight (GTW) with a maximum trailer tongue weight (TW) of 1200 lbs.Class V hitches used for weight distributing are rated up to 17,000 lbs. gross trailer weight (GTW) with a maximum trailer tongue weight (TW) of 1700 lbs.Your ball mount and hitch ball need to both be rated for Class V to safely tow these weight loads. To use this class of hitch for weight distribution requires a weight distribution system.A Class V hitch has a 2-1/2" square receiver opening.Class V hitches attach to the vehicle frame only

Class IV hitches are weight carrying (WC) and weight distributing (WD) hitches depending on the vehicle and hitch specifications. Not all Class IV hitches are rated to be both. See the specific hitch for that information.Class IV hitches used as weight carrying are rated up to 10,000 lbs. gross trailer weight (GTW) with a maximum trailer tongue weight (TW) of 1000 lbs.Class IV hitches used for weight distributing are rated up to 14,000 lbs. gross trailer weight (GTW) with a maximum trailer tongue weight (TW) of 1400 lbs.A Class IV hitch usually has a 2" square receiver opening.A higher class drawbar does not increase the towing capacity of the hitch. To use this class of hitch for weight distribution requires a weight distribution system.Class IV hitches attach to the vehicle frame only.

I can tell you are much more familiar with this than I am. I have never used the rear hitch. I am looking at the question based on a 5th wheel hitch, if that makes any difference.
Thanks
Dick

I'm just quoting what Curt says about it, my WD hitch is a 12K Equal-i-zer.

Let me tell you this,
I pull a sabre 5th wheel with a 2,000 lb pin weight 14,000 lb gross with my 3/4 ton duramax with no issues.
What are your camper specs, and your payload rating on your tire loading sticker on the truck?

It doesn't make a difference.
Basically your truck is limited to a single component which gives you the final tow rating for your truck.
It may be tires , hitch, axles hard to say.
I'm guessing it's limited to your receiver hitch even tho your not using it .

Turbs,
Unless I'm mistaken, in his original post he was asking about GVWR, not tow ratings. So the hitch really has nothing to do with the limits on GVWR.
