Babock, I started looking into electronics to support my fan, or look for a variable speed fan. I thought, maybe spin it slower in standby mode, then to ramp up when the cooling cycle was active. Decided to keep it simple for 3 reasons. Fan draws so little, the gains would be minimal. I also thought the supporting elctronics would draw almost as much as the power savings. (My “engineering” skills are not the greatest....LOL) Lastly, just keep it simple-less things to break.
This fan is rated for 100,000 hours, so even if it last half that long, I doubt I will see it die off. That is why I bought 2....LOL!

rockfordroo, I noticed a lot of uneven cooling before I added the fan when the fridge was really full. This seemed to fix that.

Since I am already designing the controller board to do a few more things that are more complex, why not adjust the fan and save a little power that way. I will also likely put the controller to sleep at times to reduce power for the controller board itself.

Thanks!
I'll check those things again in the spring when I'm getting set up again. I defrosted it after it happened and it seemed good for the last 3 or4 weeks it was on before shutting it down for the winter. I have remote digital thermometers in both the freezer and fridge and try to keep the fridge around 37 degrees.

Was it a warm humid day? More humid than you would normally camp in?

Yes, that's exactly why people use fans. Without the fan, when the fridge "turns off" you can get stratification. When it starts up again, you should get cool air dropping and warm air rising, but it's due to natural flows, which can be slow and/or impeded by stuff in the fridge. The fan improves this flow and keeps it moving all the time.

I don't think so, it wasn't all in one day. I think it started with a little ice on the fins and then snowballed from there over a couple weeks.

I have the controller and some serial temp sensors. Now just have to find some time to do it. Thought I would have way more time being retired. Now I am training for a century bike ride in a month!

Booked like 15 nights of camping "for" it. My CC bill is going to notice. Future-me will be happy.
Ludington state park (Ludington, mi) fills up impossibly fast. I was on within a minute of when a fri-sun stay opened up 6 months out. Just got spinning wheels until nothing available. Just insanity....

Changed out a low hanging light over the dining table with a flat 1 so I wouldn't hit my head anymore and turned on the fridge to get ready to pack it for a trip next weekend.

We want to try tapping a few of our maple trees to try out a small batch this year. I'm having a hard time trying to figure out when to tap though. Any advice?

Watch for a period in the forecast where it's going to freeze at night and get into the upper 30's during the day for 3 or 4 days in a row. That is the best time to tap. Not knowing where you're from I can't put an average start date on it for you. In NH it is usually around March 1st.

Thanks! I'm thinking late February, depending on what the forecast looks like. I'm in rural NY state a little less than 2 hours North of the city. Technically we've had some weather with upper 30's in the day and freezing at night already, but there will be plenty more night time freezing through all of February.
