Double checked air pressures on all the tires, greased the hubs, and checked all the external ports for any signs of bug infestation in prep for our first trip in a while...

Prepping for long road trip:

Appliances:
  • Dumped contents of water heater. Rinsed out precipitates using water heater wand. Anode looked good.
  • Checked temps on gas refrigerator, having turned it on a few days earlier.
Water:
  • Filled 30 gallon water bladder, sanitized by adding bleach. (Interestingly, I learned the correct amount in conversation with Bing Chat bot. Validated info using source references. It was easier and faster than normal search.)
  • Disposed of the old KW1 filter cartridge and cleaned the housing after sitting for months. Left empty for now, will replace with new in a few days.
  • Replaced old Camco bullet water filter used for filling fresh tank through gravity port. Will date new one on first use.
  • Dumped remainder of fresh tank, refilled from bladder through antifreeze port using water pump. Flushed system with sanitized water. (Don't forget Water-Miser return line. Stagnant water in it can contaminate fresh tank.)
  • Ordered replacement for cracked shut-off valve on Oxygenics shower head discovered while flushing lines.
Suspension:
  • Spent 20 minutes getting grease gun working. Greased EZ-Lube wheel bearings, spinning wheel while doing so until grease pushed out hub. Later learned I'm supposed to do that until new grease replaces old grease. Will repeat later as a project while on the road. (Did complete bearing inspection and repack last year and will do on alternate years. All are fairly new anyway, having replaced both axles, and they don't get that much mileage.)
  • Reprogrammed all TPMS transmitters. Replaced all tires last month, resulting in them being distributed randomly.
  • Added new TPMS cap on spare tire, added new cover to replace the one lost last year. Cover will conceal TPMS cap to prevent theft.
  • Retorqued all wheels and inflated to 75#. Will deflate to 65# cold when hitching up for road trip next week. (It's easier to deflate than inflate, if they lose a little in the meantime.)

Went back today, started water heater and AC. Both work as expected.

Tested using an antenna for my wireless modem. It improved the signal from unusable to usable, so it's worth playing with to figure out how to connect the antenna outside when camping. That's a project to keep me occupied on our coming long trip. We're spending a month at Cades Cove as hosts. I hope it will work there but to improve a signal you need to have one in the first place. I'm not optimistic.

The first day of summer is coming… and there’s stuff to do that I do on a quarterly basis.

Pulled the trailer out to open and allow it to ventilate; cleaned the floors; restocked the pantry and frig; checked our consumables (food, water, propane); replenished our supplies for coffee; inspected the tires, checked torques and pressures; checked all batteries: TT, flashlights, headlamps, handheld radios, backup batteries; checked the First Aid supplies, emergency medical bag ; checked essential dog treats and toys; pulled out all the spring clothing and replaced it with stuff needed for summer. Tested the radios; put handheld units on chargers to top off capacity. Collected hoses (drying out from use last week); flushed gray water tanks, inspected valves and outlet covers.

Checked fuses and circuit breakers. Hooked up repaired generator, ran it for 30 minutes under full load: tested both a/c units, fans.

Re-stocked adult beverages (6 days of training next week, certain to deplete electrolytes!); stocked our instructors’ favorite beer. Restocked frig. Checked spice rack. Sharpened knives. Checked dishware, pot, pans, glassware, kitchen consumables. Washed coffee and soup thermos; checked Epipen injectors stored in oversized thermos.

Dragged out the dolly and inspected underside, mounts, storage, lights; checked the freshwater tank (empty); flushed the freshwater tank; connected the TV and checked TT lights; dragged out the ladder and cleaned the front windscreen; scrubbed the steps; vacuumed the dirt from the base of steps hinge; treated the rubber seals with Armor All; swept, mopped floors; cleaned the toilet, shower, and all sinks. Pulled out underside storage to clean and reorganize; checked tools, duct and electrical tape; all camping gear (axe, hatchet, files, sharpening stones, rope, tarp, fire-starting supplies, etc); cleaned rugs for step base. Tested external showers.

Removed a few more stickers.

Sounds like a lot of busy-work, but we live in an area subject to wildfires and flooding. Want to know we’re ready to go as fast as we can load our bug-out bags, connect TT-TV, and depart: our TT is our lifeboat.

Our new 5th wheel came with a bath vanity that had the faucet on the side of the sink instead of behind the sink. To make matters worse, it was a dinky little faucet that barely reached into the sink. I HATE that. Our Mini Lite had the same stupid design and I ended up making a whole new bath cabinet and countertop ( 3.5" deeper) so that I could move the faucet behind the sink where it belonged.

I didn't want to go thru that again. This vanity cabinet is an odd shape and there really isn't any room to expand on it. Sooooooooo . . . after much searching and googling I finally found a faucet with an extended spout - - 8 inches of spout. Now at least I get the water near the center of the basin where you can actually get your hands under it and accomplish something - and it swivels, too. And it looks pretty good, too, I think.

Before and after pics:
(the before pic is actually a screen grab from the internet. I didn't take a pic before I swapped it out)

Dug my buffer out of the shed out of a bottom crate (20 minutes labor alone), took a work platform and cleaned and polished my trailer front. Had to get the top from the roof. Had the TT since April 2018, put some wax on it in 2020, none since. Front was getting really chalky.
Then pressure washed the wheels, wheel wells, rear bumper, and front A frame. The rear bumper and the propane tank both were looking a little Irish (a bit green).
While camping over the past several days, I removed several stickers and adhesive, including THREE dealer stickers and several sad looking safety stickers. I really dig plastic razor blades for this. Peeling & lifted dirty edges on stickers make the TT look old and uncared for.

Just got done installing a cheap shunt type battery monitor. It was about ) $20. Because it did not come with ANY wiring. Had to order some 4 wire cable & wait on that. So that cost close to the shunt.
Figuring the wire connections was a struggle but got that figured out. Made a color key because I’ll have to disconnect the display to finish installing it on a panel.
It’s working. I wanted to make sure before hacking holes in the paneling for final install.

Installed new Dexter EZ Flex equalizers with heavy duuty shackles, wet bolts and bronze bushings. Replaced Norcold N611V front panel with new optical panel in hopes of regulating fridge temp. better. I had replaced the themistor earlier and it did not help so this is my last hope.

after several weeks of rain and almost frost temperatures i get to change my recalled (2 yrs ago) skylight on our SOB 5th wheel trailer. when they inspected it there were no cracks. now the original part is full of them and leaking everywhere in the shower.

hopefully i can get 24 hours of dry weather as its supposed to rain again for the weekend and next week.
we've seen the sun 5 days in the past month here

Installed a few items that I had removed from our previous fifth wheel. Switched out the dealer’s dual purpose battery with my two 6v Trojan T-105s. Installed my Progressive Industries EMS-HW50C and Mopeka propane tank sensors. Also installed Camco screen door cross bars on both doors. Made up some more wooden levelling squares from an old 2x10. I need to use them for the Ground Control TT auto level jacks where I have it stored. (I had an “out of stroke” warning the first time I deployed it there.) I hope to have a level gravel pad installed later this year.

Discovered that the 12V refrigerator seems to come on as soon as you turn on the battery so we’ll have to remember that whenever I’m just working on it rather than camping in it. Without the refrigerator running, I had 6.7A going to the batteries from the 200W solar panel that the factory installed.

I’m strongly considering swapping the 6V lead acid batteries for a couple of 100AH LiFePO4 batteries strictly because of the weight of the LA batteries. My back doesn’t like lifting them and they are now 4 years old. I just have to figure out what to use for a battery box since the factory-installed plastic Camco double battery box isn’t wide enough. I haven’t found any place inside the trailer to accommodate them. The factory installed 6ga wire from the WFCO WF-9855-AD auto-detecting converter to the battery box (approx. 25-30 feet wire length) so the converter shouldn’t need to be upgraded immediately. I might want to install a 4ga wire for the positive side though.

Installed three Solera 5000 (Lippert) slide out toppers. 13', 8' and 6.5'. Total cost $1250. Sure beats the $4K dealer quote!

Turned on the 12V power and refrigerator to cool it off before loading and departure Friday.

Greased the ball and spring arms on my Propride 3P hitch. Oiled other joints and surfaces.

Replaced the cartridge on the water filter.

Cranked up the Honda EU2000i to run 15 minutes. Dumped fuel can of old gas in truck to refill with fresh, for trip.

Stowed some more gear.

What did you do to your camper today?

Not me welding as I am not that talented but a good friend of mine is. We are fortifying the bumper so I can safely add a bike rack.
