What Kind of Jack Do You Use?

Those plastic drive on jacks are fine for changing one tire, but what kind of jack do you use to lift your trailer? Floor jack? Scissor jack? Electric scissor jack? Bottle jack? Something else?

And where do you place your jack stands?

I use a three ton floor jack to frame with a six inch extension and lift enough to put jack stand at spring shackles then set back on stands then do other side same way.

I remember reading a long time ago it isn't good to jack the whole trailer more than one wheel at a time because of frame flexing.

I use a 12-ton bottle jack and this little device I came up with (see photo below). I screw out the extension on my bottle jack then the rounded part of this "jack cradle" sits over that. the "uprights" then go on the spring shackles and up she goes.

I drew out the design on a napkin and a guy who was building a gate for us whipped this out the next day for $30.

Trailer Jacks

I have one scissors jack and one hydraulic bottle jack. I use them either on te frame or under the center of the springs. Not on the axle!

I use either a bottle jack if I'm on the road or if I'm at home if 3 ton floor jack and put the Jack pad right under point where the axial meets the springs. I put a block of hardwood against the spring in between the bolt ends from u-bolts so nothing is damaged and I think that's the strongest lifting point. I usually don't lift more than one wheel of time but with the heavy frame of our toy hauler I wouldn't worry too much about lifting individual axles on two jack stands and leaving two up at a time

Bottle jack at spring perch on road. Floor jack at home. If I want all four wheels off the ground; tongue jack all the way “down”. Jack standd under frame innrear. Tongue jack up andjack stands under frame st front. May have to put spaacer blocks under jsck.stands if not tall enough.

Torsion axles change things when jacking

If you have torsion axles you can not jack them on the tubes like a spring axle. On spring axles I jack from the equalizers between the axles. On torsion axles I use a bottle jack between the tires with a block of wood that goes to the trailer frame. The jack does not go to the trailer frame without a block of wood in between.

I can do two wheels at a time this way. My TT weighs about 6500# and I use a 6-8 ton jack

I have torsion axles so I made these. One for bottle jack I carry and one for air/hydraulic jack I keep at home.

I picked up a 20 ton bottle jack at a great price at Princess Auto (the Canadian version of Harbor Freight). Where you jack depends on the type of suspension and axles you have.

For those of you who don't know Jack. Meet my Jack.

I've just seen 2 of these style "railroad jacks" on Craigslist and the seller was asking in the $500 range! And it wasn't even gold plated. Crazy to me.
I have my own fabricated jacking/leveling system made from tongue jacks and it will lift all four tires off the ground. It has worked flawless for a couple of years now and cost was about $250 in materials.
For other trailers I use the air over hydraulic 20ton bottle jack.
