Yes Another Tire Thread

Seems like a simple process just to put better tires on my 5th wheel and replace the TowMax tires that seem to have a lot blow outs.

First up was the Goodyear Marathons but was told by Goodyear customer support those are made for Pop Ups and Travel Trailers and not for 5th wheels. Also read a lot negative reviews but seems like the people that are having blowouts are on heavier 5ers...

Goodyear Customer Support recommended G614x85R16 but they ended up being two wide and won't clear the rod that drives my slide on the passenger side of the 5th wheel (has about 1.5 inches clearance now with TowMaxx). Called Goodyear back and told the only other option would be Marathons which they don't recommend.

Now I got call into our RV dealer and he researching wheels with more offset which will give more clearance and won't void the warranty.

Plan on the TST tire monitor with what ever tire I decided on.

Has anyone else have this much trouble?

When I researched tires, I came down to being split between Maxxis and Goodyear Marathons. The Maxxis edged out the Goodyears based on reviews and that's what I went with.

They were an easy swap- once I got up the courage to actually change the first tire (which also happened to be the first tire I've ever changed in my life). Merchant Tire unmounted the old ones, remounted the new ones for a tip for the garage guys. But, they had heartburn over balancing them since they were big tires.

When I replaced them, I debated a lot of tires and options. I am space constrained between my tires with having less than 2" of space. But, I also had to do something as I was significantly overloaded on one tire and maxed out on 2 others. I ultimately went nutty and switched to 17.5" rims + LR H or J rated tires. I gained space between the wheels and increased capacity by about 1,500 lbs.

Here is what Goodyear Customer service sent a link to about the Marathon tires are "Trailer and Pop Tires" and the G614 RST are for 5ers. See page 4.

Scroll down to page 18 of your pdf. It shows Marathons are also for 5th wheels. Especially if you don't have 16 inch wheels, since the G614 only comes in a 16.

My old 5er had 15 inch wheels. It had a GVWR of 12000 lbs. I did run Marathons on it until Marathons went down hill (about 5 or 6 years ago). Ran whatever load range E trailer I could find after that. E's used to be hard to find in a 15 inch.

The new trailer is definitely a candidate for the G614... or bigger.

I have run two sets of Michelin LT on my 36 foot 5er with no problems. Change at 7 years. Original Coopers threw a tread at 3 years. Would not stand behind them.

You might want to take a look at the Sailun site. They have a tire comparable to the GY 614 that might work if you can get the proper size, and I believe they're less expensive. Please note I've never had Sailun tires and only make this recommendation based on other poster's opinions.

Tires

Do a little research and find a good LT tire the same size. Put them on, lower your speed and watch your pressure and you'll be OK.
I replaced my China's with Firestone trans force with 60K later and still going with no problems.

I'm a fan of LT tires, but I don't think they're a cure all. In many cases, you can be majorly overloaded given that an equivalent LT tire has less carrying capacity than its corresponding ST size/counterpart.

Thanks everyone. I solved my problem(s) and now I'm the proud owner of 17.5 inch Goodyear G rated tires. Wasn't cheap since they come attached to new 5er. Just having to many problems with my current one. I have the cap fading problem and seam separation along the front cap and lot little things going wrong.

I pick up new 5er next week. Went up and ask about new rims with more of a offset and talk about some other issues I was having and decided just to trade it in and let some else deal with all the problems.

I don't know if I can use those kind of words on this forum with MOD deleting the post so I will just give you a hint.

Hint - The new 5er is named after a state that the first letter is a "M" made by company that makes a cheap beer that starts with "K".

Well, you SOB (some other brand).

Lots of SOBs still hang out here. It is where the cool kids are, after all!

We have wanted a Front Living room since we saw our first one and then we saw this one with front window (yep a large picture window in the front cap looking forward). The only negative is the smashed bugs and I'm sure my wife going to make we clean on every stop.

We saw that "M" state's front kitchen model with the same front cap window at the RV show this year. I'm not as crazy about the front lounge, but the front kitchen was a neat layout. And that window is very cool.

Enjoy.

We looked at that one but the dealer warned us that pin weights with the forward kitchen is really high when loaded to go camping. More we though about traffic flow we decided the front living room we be fit our life style better. Also, we didn't like the large booth type dinning room table, we like the free stand table chairs better. Keeping the bugs off the window is going to be a real challenge.

As in allies through the campground to the laundry room, I thought of you as I looked in a big class A window. They can keep theirs clean, so can you.

Please post pics once you take possession!
