^^^ All great stuff above! Thanks for the input. I've been playing with the route and timing, but really have been busting butt to get the house ready.

I mentioned before that we signed on with a property management company. We've been working towards getting the house ready for showings and rentable.

We had listing pictures taken last week so that they could create a rental listing. That involved a ton of cleaning, organizing, and major decluttering. I took a small truckload of stuff to the local auction house and to the dump. The house looked pretty good for pictures.

We also had a Lead-based paint inspection done due to the age of the property and Maryland laws. We passed that with flying colors.

And today, we are getting our chimney inspected.

And now we start packing!

Yesterday was exactly 2 months until we're supposed to be departing!

Bon voyage! Just don't over plan it too much; often times less is more! We're leaving NEPA next month thru MI, the WI Dells, Mall of America, western Canada, up into AK and back another route. Enjoy!

We don't know how to NOT plan. or (I'm not sure!)

But, it's getting more and more real. Today the rental listing for our house went up on the property manager's site:

Doug, one place I would like to suggest is Fossil Butte National Monument in Southwest Wyoming. I believe the closest city is Kemmerer, WY. There are also quarries in the area where you can dig and keep your own fossils. I think that would be a great stop to combine fun with education. Just a thought.

Gee, skipping PA? But, we have Roadside America!

OK, you probably have settled on a title already , but I was thinking "The Setzer's Sabre Sojourn"

Have you thought about going above the Mason Dixon line? I can recommend a trip to the primary LL Bean store.

I'm so Jealous! We did East coast to West and back again; took two months. Wish we had extended our time. Cherry picked everything we wanted to see and still missed some things because we only allotted 2 months. It's a time to remember. Have fun, stay safe and take lots of pictures.

We're actually avoiding most of the east coast because with our home base being in Maryland right now, we can explore the surrounding area when we get back. Our trip officially starts in Florida and we go north and then west from there.

But, the biggest panic of them all- in exactly 3 weeks, movers come to take all of our stuff to storage. I'm shocked at how unprepared I feel we are...

Fear not young triceratops! We did the same to go sailing...the funny thing is that we only saved our most important crap in storage...when we got back...the only thing we regretted was not being more brutal in the culling as fully 80% of what we deemed invaluable turned out not to be!
Continued good wishes on your prep & trip!

Ok, faithful followers - I need a Chicago campground reservation recommendation. I don't mind being a bit outside of the city and taking a train in. I would prefer an Illinois address, though- for my "visited states map".

Ideas?

Good luck guys and safe travels! This is an awesome thing you're doing and I can only hope to get the chance some day. It'll be a great time once you can finally get on the road all the hard work will pay off.

You are doing what so many of us want to do! God's speed in all your travels.
I looked, but didn't see any mention of what Mandy and the kids will do during your 10 hour workdays. Will they spend their time playing around the campground, or will there be some short day trips, minus Dad?

Best wishes for you and your family on a safe trip! If you are still planning on coming to Des Moines, I recommend either Ledges State Park or Jester State Park. Both are close to I-80 / I-35 interchange and will allow you to make trips to nearby sights.

In Indianapolis, I highly recommend looking at Turkey Run State Park in Bloomington, IN. We have stayed their twice and it is beautiful.

When you are in Detroit, I would pick the Henry Ford and Greenfield Village over Ann Arbor. Both of those are in Dearborn (west side of Detroit). There is a state park a few miles west called Marbury that is very nice. You can also try Sterling State Park (30 minutes south, but on Lake Erie), or possibly even Camp Dearborn (Actually in Milford).

I grew up in Dearborn, and now live in Iowa. Feel free to email me if you want any more specific advice. Good luck!
