Now that I have the Beartooth drive straightened out, I will ask the next question. Figured it would be better here than starting another thread...

I am already booked at Fishing Bridge in YS in Early September, however looking into it further...pictures and youtube videos it appears they really wedge you in there without much room to enjoy the site or the location. Any recommendations on great places to stay just outside of the park?? We want to spend our 5 days in and around the park but have no issues staying outside of it to enjoy the scenery and trip more. Does not need full hookups...but power and water preferred...thanks!

Grizzly RV Park in West Yellowstone is a great RV park

Try Rocky Mountain RV park in Gardiner, MT. You can see the north entrance to Yellowstone from the park. We spent a week there, nice place. Rocky Mountain RV Park and Lodging Vacation at Yellowstone National Park

We have had good luck with both of the KOA's near West Yellowstone.
Mountainside KOA (a little further west) seems less commercial than West Yellowstone KOA.

Since we are coming from the east and plan on making day trips into the park, plus going to Red Lodge/Cooke, we opted to stay in Cody. We have a bit more drive to the park, but closer to Beartooth/Chief Joseph, Cooke City, and Lamar Valley. This also means less time sitting in traffic in the park. We typically figure 4-6 hours per loop drive time if in the park during peak. While our travel friends won't see all of the park, we'll get them to Old Faithful & canyon falls, plus a few hidden gems we know about, we consider the Beartooth a must see for them.

I believe the sign at the Top of the World recommends RV total lengths under 35'. That is teuck and trailer. Very tight hairpin turns.

Do the chief Joseph Scenic highway too. You can do the whole loop from Cooke city, to red lodge and over belfry. Then down 72 to the Jct 296 that will take you back to Cooke city.

Ps: take warm clothing just in case. We were there in august and crossed the pass at 35*. Cooke city was a balmy 38.

A few years ago while going over the pass in late June, there was still a 20' wall of snow at the top where the road was cut through. You can check out some cool videos on YouTube of them clearing the pass in the spring. They usually start around the first of May and hope to have it open by the end of the month.

Been there

I towed it in 2013 with my tundra. I had no problems as it was summer, no snow or ice, and the TV was equiped for the Rockwood 5er. I'm not recommending anyone do it, just that I did, rather by accident, and I'll tell you you need plenty of torque going up and good brakes coming down. Stop often at lookouts to allow brakes to cool on the way down. Mine never got more than 20-30 degrees above normal towing temps. I checked them at every stop. Wife thought I was just playing with my new toy (lazer thermometer). The drive is probaly the best I've ever made. Great views and beautiful scenery. I'd like to do it again one day without the 5er. As far as the Fishing Bridge CG goes, I've stayed there twice. Once in a 26' TT and most recently in a 32' 5er. Can you believe they put us in the same spot both times? It is close and tight but doable. The main thing I've learened is to fudge on your length when you reserve. If you have a 30' tell them you need room for a 35'. We had bison walk through between rvs and a bear crossed the highway about 500 yards from cg entrance. It has gas, groceries, cafe and a nice, large souvenier shop near the entrance. But I'll probably check for a roomier cg on our next visit. Glad to see the referrals on this thread.

As you have proven, one can tow an RV over Beartooth. It was not too bad in our Class C, but of you can do it without the RV I think you will find it a better experience.

I grew up in that part of the world then moved to Az in 1978. We didn't think nothing of making the loop either way going thru Red Lodge and taking the Chief Joseph trail or out at Gardiner. Made the trip one day with a couple girls, a case of beer in my 72' El Camino, but that's another story. Used to take our sleds up to Cooke City around New Years, get rooms and party down, But that's another story as well.
Someone mentioned going through Red Lodge and over to Belfry and back to Cody. When I was a kid (54') there were still two working coal mines in the Bearcreek area where we got our coal for heating.
Anyways I have Cowboyed all over from Livingston east to the Dakotas and just love that country but I like AZ winters better.

Good info dcheatwood...after reading a bunch of the posts we are leaning towards setting up in Fishing Bridge and making a day trip to Beartooth. Depending on how things go the day of travel might help us decide if we tow it. I have seen a lot of pictures and videos of trailers and RVs making it...just have to figure out how everything works into the schedule. I have certainly looked at several of the CG suggested and a few others, we are trying to figure out what will work best. I am sure we can suck it up for 5 days and make Fishing Bridge work without any issues. Pretty new to the site but already some great info and lots of learning...Thanks everyone!

You could split it up and do a night or two in Cody. Then make your day trip to beartooth and chief Joseph. Plus go to the wild bill museum, rodeo, and gunfight in Cody.

What a beautiful drive! Drove the Beartooth Highway last week in our Forester Class C with no problems. It had been closed for a few days due too snow and looks like it closed for the season now. Really worth the drive. The views are amazing.

GPS Picture shows some of the switchbacks!
