Campground Speed Limit

Sometimes it's really difficult to maintain a campground's posted speed limit.

I've seen like 13 1/2 before. Though, this brings up a legitimate point- I think 5 mph, if enforced, is way too slow.

You won't think its to slow when a child is injured or killed because it wasn't enforced.

All I'm saying is at 5mph, my child over takes my vehicle when she's on her bike and she's 9. I just think it doesn't need to be *that* slow. I'm not advocating for 25mph or even un-enforced speed limit, but I think that 10mph is a realistic and proper speed limit (enforced).

I think they post speed limits like this to remind you to drive slow. The numbers are so unusual they catch your eye. I mean really, 7 MPH?

That I'm ok with, I just think it's excessive to yell from the gate house for doing 9. Just my opinion, and no I don't advocate for mowing children down for points and prizes.

What about the child on a scooter or skateboard that falls, what about the child chasing his friends and comes running out of a campsite between trees. Think about it how would you feel if it was your child? It can happen and it doesn't mean parents aren't watching.

I've seen 5 1/2. I think 7 is a fair compromise, it has you going somewhere between 5 and 10 although most golf carts seem to be going much faster than this most of the time.

Amen brother, was pulling our Alumalite 5er back to the factory and was creeping along in Mishawaka, IN at about 10-15 mph and a kid rode his bike off the sidewalk and into the side of the truck just behind the r rear tire and lit just in front of the trailer tire. Thank God I got stopped before running over him. His mother saw it as did several others and all came out and thanked me. I will tell you, it puts the fear of God in you when you see anybody riding a bike from then on. Motorcycles too.

children will be children, when at a CG most do not look before darting out from behind a parked car or truck. If you are driving too fast a TV will always win when encountering a child. I have also seen grown ups walk from behind a parked vehicle with out looking. Most times they have a refreshment in their hand and are heading to a neighbour. Many campers leave their common sense at home when they get to a CG.

No one is implying that, but 7.5 is plenty fast in a cg for ANY vehicle! My wife and I still cringe when we see anyone on a bike and our incident happened in 1981.

We get that, but we all need to remember that a campground is essentially a playground for young and old alike. I've seen to many near misses to advocate anything more than 5mph.

I'm not saying that 10mph is too fast it is the campers that do not adhere to the posted speed limit. I have seen many young drivers (early 20's) speed up to the gate at our CG. They have to go past the children's playground before getting to the entrance gate. Some of the cars have been going so fast they slide to a stop. Any camper that has children or grand children usually do not drive at an excessive speed.

I know that at the county park we've been camping at has a 20mph speed park wide, as you come to the turn prior to the campground there is playground equipment about150' off the road and a clear line of site to the kids. There is a 15 mph speed there. When you come down the hill into the campground the speed is 10mph. Yes, there have been a couple less intelligent campers that seem to be qualifying for Talledega, but are reminded by the host that the speed limit is 10. Most of us will do 5, just because of the kids...both old and young. There are a lot of walkers and bicyclers out there. CG is small enough so don't mind going that slow.

It's 5mph at my RV resort because a child did get hit by a vehicle. The seasonal residents for the most part go slow at 5-10mph. Nobody is gonna whine if you do a few miles over the campground speed limit. The big offenders of speed is the weekend warriors and the visitors that the seasonal residents have on a weekend. So the resort used their bobcat and created speed bumps. That now forces the speed limit.

The idea is to go slow as the kids do not look were they are going and shoot out on bikes all the time. The slow speed is also out of respect for other campers so you don't kick up dirt road dust all over the place. Put your truck in tow mode even when not towing and it's no problem to idle along at a slow speed.
