Can't believe what I saw on the road today...
So I'm driving south on I-81 in northeast PA this morning, and I'm coming up on this rig from behind. As I'm getting closer, I'm saying to myself, "That can't be what I think it is, can it?" Then I get closer, and yes. Yes, it is: first, there's a 2500 Chevy diesel pulling what looks to be a 28-30' fiver. OK, that's normal. But then, BEHIND the TT is another hitch and an 8' utility box trailer! 2 trailers, one truck. Not legal in PA by any stretch, guy had Ontario plates. Maybe it's legal there, but not here! Is this a normal occurrence in other parts of North America? So about a quarter mile later, there's 2 PA state troopers sitting there, they see the guy go past, and boom! They're on him like white on rice. I almost had to pull over to see if I was being punk'd. I couldn't believe it.

I have seen something similar - 5th wheel and a small bass boat being towed behind it.
Not sure if it is legal or not in Florida but makes ya wonder how in the world does he back that rig up

I once saw a Class A motorhome pulling a Jeep Cherokee and a 16' bass boat.

Seen it. Don't like it. Many don't know the laws. Even in states where it is illegal, often the offender will not be ticketed, just warned.

They will honor your home state usually unless you act like an azz with them. Alabama doesn't allow it either and I took my doubles straight into downtown Guntersville and up the hill to the State Park. No problems and went right by the courthouse.

Haven't loooked recently, but about ten years I printed a list off the internet that listed states that allowed double towing and regulations. I live in Colorado which allows it and travel to Wisconsin pulling an ATV on a trailer to Wisconsin which at the time didn't. And never had a problem with law enforcement. At the time, if people wanted to pull a boat behind their 5th wheel, in Wisconsin, they had to get a permit. And you have to unhook before backing up. Wayne

Pulling a trailer behind a fifth wheel is completely legal in many states/provinces. With my old fifth, pulled my jet boat to the lake, and my quad trailer to the Black Hills and many other places. The rig pulled like a dream, and with a bit of practice, backing up wasn't impossible. Semi drivers do it all the time.
A lot of people don't know the rules of the road, so we have much to learn.

I may be new to this forum and the RV community in general, but I've been towing trailers as long as I've been legally driving, and if it's not legal in your state, there's really no way to learn the "rules of the road" on this particular topic. I'm pretty open minded, but I just don't like the looks of the tandem trailer idea...semi drivers don't call them "widow makers" just for farts and giggles. It just looks too easy to get way out of control in a hurry.

Legal in Alberta and Saskatchewan, my neighbor does it with a Dodge 3500 pulling a Dutchman 5er and a small boat.

I bought a trucker's atlas, all the rules are in there.
As far as safety, one has to use common sense. You wouldn't want to try pulling a 30-foot 10,000 lb boat behind a 20-foot fifth wheel. Like I said, ours pulled like a dream and never once caused me one bit of concern.

I guess if I decide tandem is for me, I'd better pick up a trucker's atlas! First I'd have to decide what other toy I'd want to pull behind the TT. Wait, I think it just came to me...motorcycle trailer. Since it's not legal here, I don't think the idea would get off the ground...
