I use a Uniden 520 xl with all Wilson top shelf accessories. Wilson trucker 2000 antenna and a Firestik stake pocket mount. I can get anywhere from 15-20 mile range on regular highway roads. Works well for me. It's all about the antenna and swr's. I'm close to 2.

Where are you mounting the antennae when towing a 5er?

Picking up Florida is no problem - Most of us run 2KW linear amps.

Do not be tempted to add a high power amplifier. Today's highly computerized vehicles can be easily damaged by anything except a perfect installation.

This is new concern to me. I was not aware of this, everyone just did it. I used to get a ham buddy to sell me his old kickers when he was moving up. It has been 20 plus years since, and I am now considering a CB for travel.

Thanks for the heads up on the need to re-consider circumstances.

Unhappy Pickup vs. transmission?

Wait Kenny-

What in the world could you talk about when jabbering with someone many states away while you are on the road? Other than the weather perhaps?
They certainly couldn't help you with the closest el cheapo diesel stop, etc., could they?

I would admit that it would be fun listening in to someone at that far a distance, and perhaps getting into mischief a bit making them believe that
you are behind them somewhere on the road but I guess there could be
merits to the distance thing. For the most part I've always used mine within
the 10-20 mile range and got most of my good info from the big guys on the
road...they're the real pro's and know all the tricks, in's-and-out's.

One side note to all, though I have a permanent CB with a mag. roof mount for my truck, I tend to use a portable Radio Shack (shock?) hand-held
unit while in the MH. Is transportable and surprisingly far-ranging, self-powered (9 C cells) and can also be transferred between all my other vehicles on demand. It can also be hooked into any roof antenna when needed. I find though, sadly, that I tend to listen more on the radio and NOT converse with the others esp. since the standards have really gone to hell-and-a-handbasket since I started back in the early 70's with this stuff. Too
many creepers out there now.

X2 with Flybob. I run a Galaxy DX 959 SSB through a 350 Watt linear amp in the TV, but NEVER use the linear because it DOES affect the TV's electronics. Even makes my windows roll up and down but never removed it, just don't turn it on. Magnetic Firestick 5/8 wave antenna on the roof of the TV.
I also run a Yaesu FT 897 at home.
