Cross country trip with a stop at Wrigley field.

Looking for any recommendations for a rv park to stay at and near public transportation to get to the ballpark. I always wanted to visit Wrigley Field and with the Giants in town makes this a must stop. Our next stop will be Cleveland to see the rock roll hall of fame. I would appreciate any suggestions here as well.

jcinca: There is a KOA in Union, Illinois that is close to Metra (public transportation) stations in nearby town of Woodstock, Il. About 8 miles away. I hope that helps.

There is a new county park in Big Rock, KANE county IL that you can camp at and the Metra station is in Aurora IL about 5 to 6 miles away. Here is the link to the park, Forest Preserve Property

I believe it is $25 a day for non-residents my cousin has stayed there and said it is a good weekend destination for the price.

We did a trip similar to this in 2009. We stayed in Union at the KOA, it is a long trip into the city. We actually left our RV at the park and stayed in the city for a couple of days to avoid the long trip. The RnRHOF is pretty good, just as long as your not upset Madonna is inducted as opposed to 100s of true rock bands.

Back to Cleveland. Definitely do the Hall, we also went to the Pro Football HOF and the Christmas Story House. The Christmas Story House is in Cleveland. If you liked the movie it is definitely worth a visit. Also the town and house the movie Groundhog Day was filmed is close Woodstock, Ill.

We stayed here when in Ohio:

We stayed here in Union:

Unfortunately I remember more about the Union KOA than the other, not all great stuff. The sites were a little close, Our sight was on grass and pretty unlevel. It took quite a bit of fanageling to get us close to level. I remember it taking about an hour and 1/2 to get into the city from Union on I-90, without traffic.

The above suggestions are pretty good. A campground that's 5 - 10 miles away from public transportation is about as close as you are going to get.

Unfortunately, you are also looking at around 2 hour train ride to the ballpark.

They've since added another lane to *most* of I-90, so traffic isn't quite as big a problem as it used to be. They are still in the process of it in some sections. Lots of construction once you get into the city limits near O'Hare airport.

Chicago is not an RV friendly town.

The only place in the city that I could find when I visited two years ago was the McCormick Place marshaling yard. McCormick Place is a huge, huge building close-in (south side of downtown) just off Lake Shore Drive that is used, among other things, for venues like the auto show and boat show and other large conventions. The marshaling yard is where all the semi's load and unload and park. Basically just a large parking lot. It is fenced and gated.

It is cheap ($22 a night) but there are NO hookups and it gets regularly bad reviews. And I would hate to pull a trailer thru downtown Chicago and I am somewhat familiar with the city since I grew up in the suburbs (albeit a while ago). If you don't know the city I can only imagine it would be a nightmare.

I could find no other parks closer than 30-40 miles out of the city. I ended up at a park almost 70 miles away, near DeKalb, and drove into the city each day.

Google Chicago area RV Parks. There aren't all that many really. Pick one near Metra (the suburban train service) if you don't want to drive every day.

A friend stayed at one of the Forest Preserve parks but said it was also no hookups and they closed the gate at 10pm, so they couldn't enjoy any late night entertainment without being locked out of their site.

Casino in Joliet Il

We have stayed at the casino in Joliet Illinois. It's very nice and secure. You will have to checkout the transportation side of the issue, but the campground is reasonable and has full hookups.

There is a beautiful county campground in Elgin Il, Kane County- Burnidge Forest Preserve/Paul Wolff Campground 38W235 Big Timber Road Elgin, IL 60124. It is $25.00 a night w/ water and electric. It's just a couple miles straight west of Elgin Big Timber Metra Station, which will take you to Union Station Chicago.
