Custer State Park SD campground recommendations.

Planning a trip to Custer State Park SD in mid September this year. Never been there. Looking for recommendations for Custer State Park or possibly the surrounding area. Don't need nothing fancy like resorts. Just looking for something reasonable. Thanks!

It's a beautiful park. We visited a couple of years ago and should have allocated more time.

We stayed at the KOA in Rapid City and used the toad to see the area. There are lots of other options both in the park and around it. Others will chirp in on others.

I hope you have a toad because there are great places to see where the Georgetown just won't fit, like the Needles.

We just sold our 2004 Georgetown. Great RV, but not needed for our future travel plans.

Thanks coupevillefish. Been doing some research on the area and I agree it's beautiful. So many places to stay. Just wanted to hear some firsthand experiences form other members. And yes, we are towing our Ford Focus.

We stayed at Fort Welikit. The DW and I enjoyed. It really is nothing fancy but had the things we wanted. It was close enough for us to drive and enjoy the surroundings. I have attached the RV review. Good Luck!

We really enjoy staying in the Park at the State Park Campgrounds. Our preference is the Game Lodge campground. This puts you in the area of everything you want to see and do. Sept is a great time of year. Be sure to get resv. early.

Custer state park

I have looked on the internet & the individual sites but can anybody give me a real life answer on Custer, Blackhills, Mt Rushmore entry fees?

I'll be at Custer state park and the surrounding area on my motorcycle in 4 weeks. Not looking for guided site seeing tours but just personal site-seeing & viewing.

thanks in advance for responses

Custer RV parks

Stayed at Big Pines in Custer in September 2015 great place to stay rates very reasonable. We were there a week should allow at least 2 weeks if you want to give some quality time to seeing everything in the area, I plan to go back:

Smile Custer and surrounding park fees

Currently if you go to the USGS .org site, you can purchase a Senior pass for $20.00 which is good for all in one vehicle and good for life. It is good @ ALL National Parks and gets you discounts on camping etc.
Just ordered ours.

Wife & I prefer the "Game Lodge" campground. We had a site right on the stream. Near everything you want to see and do. Be sure to get reservations.

We stayed at Flintstones bedrock City, attached to a small amusement park. Campground was nice but no wifi at sites only at office. Mt Rushmore has a parking fee not entrance fee, can't remember how much it was. We went a year and a half ago.

How is the weather late September into October? We want to go there but are camping on Cape Cod, Massachusetts third week in September. This is in regards to Custer's last stand conversations.

For U.S. parks and you are a senior, you can get a $10.00 pass that is lifetime. It has covered all Federal places like Monuments, Wildlife Refuge, ect. You will get discount on driving. If you are disabled take your disability award letter and it is free. As for the State Parks they will all vary from state to state.

I bet it will be beautiful there in Sept. I have been there only during Bike Week and would love to go back and do some exploring. Be sure you ride Hwy 16A (Iron Mountain Rd). There is a tunnels and switchback. The tunnels were built to frame Rushmore. I know this does not help you as to where to stay, but hope it was helpful.

Thumbs up Beaver Creek Camp Ground Custer, SD

We stayed at the Beaver Creek Camp Ground in 09', based on recommendations from some friends. Very Clean nice sized spaces - We had inquired about a rental car upon checking in and before we got parked the owner of the Local Chevy dealership was knocking on our door.

We will staying at Ft. Weliket in Mid-June. Talked with one of the owners. Seemed very pleasant and wanting to assist in any way. They fill up quickly in that area so I would not delay.

I love the Game Lodge campground. September is a hard month to get a site though due to the Bison roundup. Plus they are reservable a year out. I can't stress how much of a better experience it was staying in the park rather than a private campground. If you want to experience Custer, you need to be in Custer.
