Hairy Moment
This gas station had no heights marked on the canopy by the time I discovered this it was too late to back out into heavy traffic and besides the gas was cheap! Asked the cashier how high, didn't know. Several climbs of the ladder and inching forward I had 4 inches spare at the edge of the canopy over my vent cover. Relief. But then realized the canopy lights were lower and staggered, so had to do a bit of a slalom to get thru.
Lesson learned: None, I would do it again for cheap gas

WOW that was close. You are one heck of a driver to avoid the lights, or was Bev driving.
Ever since I got rid of my gasser for a diesel I haven't had to deal with the low canopy issue. I use the pumps at truck stops almost exclusively now.

The last thing you want to hear is a sickening scraping sound as you drag the vent cover across the canopy. Like the OP stated, I use truck stops almost exclusively when traveling. I have enuff grey hair...*s

You win the award for taking the most risk to save a few cents. Maybe you should appear on Extreme Cheapskates!
Never go into a place where you don't know in advance how you are going to get out. I had many times with a Class A towing a car behind (where you can't back up). I pretty much only use truck stops these days.

Actually there was a lesson to be learned, there were quite a few folks at the gas station and some were trying to help by waving me forward and showing with their arms that I had at least 18 inches, what they could not see from the front was the middle vent, which is 12'9".
Lesson: Don't trust any body else with your rig and GOAL (get out and look)

Now I'm glad to only have our little Roo. Don't have to worry about those things so much right now.

I am always planning my escape when I pull into the pumps making sure I have the room to pull out. I have had a few incidents with trees as well, mostly when my GPS stops working then I yell at her and we argue!

Unless you travel the route beforehand, I think that is next to impossible.

Wow Nigel, nice slide through. That could have been expensive. You could have had Bev laying on the roof yelling down how much room you had. You need to give that naviguesser more responsibility.

George don't worry, Bev is ecstatic that you thought that she was so thin, thin enough so that she could lay on the roof with only 4 inches of space
So better give me the Peanut Brittle can't risk Bev putting on any weight, you never know when I might need someone so thin again
