I will tow at 65 or the speed limit, whichever is lower.

How about a pic of the fine notice? I'm still skeptical.

Even going through Rockford, you'll still hit I-55 once you get down to Bloomington/Normal heading towards St. Louis.

If you paid a toll crossing into Illinois from Indiana then you were on the Indiana Toll Road and got onto the Chicago Skyway, which is I90 and heads directly to Janesville.

I80 is farther south and goes east-west into Iowa.

The Indiana tollway is labeled as 80/90 all the way to Cleveland but I'm not sure where it splits before you hit Illinois.

There is a weigh station for WB traffic on I80 in Tinely Park. But that's way south.

I travel that stretch of highway at least 5 times a year. We travel to MI several times either with the 5er or not. Yes I80/I90 is at the Indiana border only this is the border between IN/OH and not IL.

It can be very confusing to anyone ask my wife? She won't drive that stretch at all. When traveling east bond towards IN/MI/OH, I80 is just a interstate in IL until this joins I294, you must pay a toll to merge on to I294. A little further this roadway I294/I80 merger with I94. I294 will end when you merge into I94/I80. I80 will leave I94 around Gary IN and will merger with I90 and the IN toll road there.

I have passed weight station on all ILL roadways and have never stop when traveling, as this is for commercial vehicles only. If you see a pick-up truck and RV at these weight stations than they are commercial vehicle and are hauling those campers to a dealer somewhere. Private RV's do not have to stop.

I won't travel the Chicago Skyway as this takes I90 right through downtown Chicago. My GPS has tried to send me this way sometimes and I just ignore the GPS.

Sorry, for hijacking this thread but stopping at weigh stations in IL or any state for that matter is just not required if you are a private vehicle hauling your trailer for travel.

This is what I was trying to say in post 16. You said it in better detail than me.

Same thing I was trying to say in post 16.

You are absolutely correct and apparently as I age I have lost some memories.

I had just retired and left Wright-Patterson on my way to Ft McCoy WI the 80/90 thing and me being stopped was on the Ohio/Indy border. But it was not a toll violation.

I was stopped and asked about not stopping at a weigh station.

Anyway all I apologize for the mis info. However I lived in Illinois more than a dozen years and IDOT police can stop you if they believe overweight even in your 5th wheel.

Again I would call the district 1 State Police and clarify travel speed limits.

God Bless

You are absolutely correct. You do not have to stop at truck scales unless you are getting paid to move a trailer. If you are getting paid to move a trailer then you need to have c.d.l. license, d.o.t. numbers and i.c.c. numbers. I was a professional driver for 38 years in the Chicago area. Pull a 5th wheel for 11 years I'm now retired and a professional tourist. Anyway ,back to the o.p. speed limit, the real question is what is the speed rating on the the tires of the r.v. usually that rating is 65 m.p.h. max. Some are even lower And should not be exceeded no matter what the highway speed is. I see so many people pass me doing 70 to 80 m.p.h. pulling an r.v. I usually pass them down the road with a blown tire and the side of their r.v. ripped off

My LT tires have a speed rating way above my comfort zone for towing. But, I may be one of those who pass you at 70 +/- .

I90, to I 39 in rockford. I 39 to i55 in Bloomington il. I55 all the way to,I 10 just north of new Orleans.
I55 in Arkansas is rough. Will shake the fillings out of your teeth. We stopped at kohokia near st. Louis. Then lake enid in Mississippi, c.o.e...real nice. Then Hammond la., then new Orleans. The only toll is I90 north of Rockford. Have fun. Ps, we did not dewinterize until we got to lake Enid. Used gallon bottle of water for coffee, and toilet.

We've pulled our camper thru Illinois several times, doing the speed limit, passing weigh stations loaded with officers and never have had one come after us for not stopping at the station. NOW, if you are driving thru the panhandle area of Florida (I10 and other hwys) and you go past an Agricultural station with ANY type of trailer, the officer will chase you down and want to look inside. They're looking for "sick plants" that could effect the citrus crop.

I have been rv,ing for 30 years. Never once had to stop at a weigh station. As for speed limits. Tires are usually rated at 65 mph. I travel at 60 mph. That's a mile a minute. Makes it really easy to calculate time and distance. I have had trailers, Clas c, and currently a class a. I find no need to go over 60, except downhill...remember, you can go uphill really slow, many times. You can only go downhill TOO FAST, once.

Not to steal the thread, but if your tires are less than about 3 years old, I think you'll find that they are rated for more than 65 mph. In the past, they had no ratings on them, meaning 65 mph. Recent regulations changes now seem to have them providing the rating on the sidewall and many people are reporting 75 mph and up.

Sounds like you got stopped by a rookie cop. Did not know the rules. Later RJD
