I 55 speed limit

I have searched several different sites and am getting conflicting info.
Does anyone have first-hand info on trailer towing speed limit on most of I 55 through IL. In Feb we are heading WI to Gulf Shores, AL
Thanks Ed

Careful. It's still 55 in some congested areas (e.g., Chicago). Keep an eye out for signs.

That's not correct for the entire length of I 55 in Illinois. I drive it often from I 355 down to Pontiac. Through the Bolingbrook/Joliet area speed limit is 55 for cars and trucks. South of Joliet the speed limit goes to 70 and the posted limit for vehicles with trailers and trucks over 4 tons is 60. That could change south of Bloomington but I rarely travel that stretch.

When towing anything the whole state of California the limit is 55. That said, It gradually crept up to 60, then 65, now big rigs are doing 70. That is pushing the threshold of pain for the LEO's, but very few tickets are written.

There are some areas in Illinois where the posted speed limit is 55 mph for RV's with higher limits for everything else (60 for trucks, 65 for cars). It is posted on the signs.

Remember Illinois has a separate police unit to deal with Semi traffic, portable scales etc who are IDOT police.

Thus I called a friend from District 1 in Sterling. I55/I57/80&88 have different speed maxes for different weights & sizes of trailer. On 55/57 you may need to pull into a weigh station if your unit is large enough.

May I recommend you call district 1 HQ Sterling IL for specific info.

Address: 3107 E Lincolnway, Sterling, IL 61081
Phone: (815) 632-4010

Good luck and merry Christmas

Where are you in Wisconsin that you would need to be on I55 to get to Alabama? Unless you are planning on going through St. Louis?

You don't have to stop at the weigh stations in Illinois with an RV. I have travelled the full length of I55,I57 and I 80 (minus Chicago of course) and have travelled at 70 MPH. I kept up with most semi's and some cars. Not sure of the posted speed limits but I used the semi's to gauge my speed. Never had a issue with the police.

Hey Ed I also travel that route from MN,WI,IL [to see family on route]

Please if I could recommend one stop along the way. The City of Greenville AL runs one of the best place I have ever stayed. Clean, Friendly and inexpensive.

The only othe place I could say was this good was near Maggie Valley in NC.

A KOA owned/run by a retired firefighter and his wife & boys. I was treated like royalty there.

As of March 2017 when you enter from Indiana on the 80/90 tollway you better stop. As the signage was poor and construction large I missed the stop at weigh station.

Other than I have dash cams I would have paid a $250 fine.

I did have to appeal the fine and send video so I am very unsure of your comment. No intent to argue though just my experience riding the $150.00 tollway from Indy all the way through Janesville and getting a mailed citation for not stopping in my small TT

Seen a lot of RV"s on America's highways. NEVER saw one in a commercial weigh station. Maybe there's one somewhere that's Commercial, but I have never seen one.

Sounds like you got ticketed for failure to pay Toll, NOT failure to stop at a commercial weigh station. I might be wrong.

I doubt that you'll run into it in February, but be very careful around Illinois work zones. They love to use photo enforcement and just send out tickets for speeding through the work zone.

If you were heading to Janesville you were on I90 (tollway), not I80. I90 doesn't have weigh stations in Illinois. I80 has a westbound one before I57. As others have stated you probably missed a toll and not a weigh station.
I90 and I80 separate near I65 in Indiana.

I think he might be talking about the I-94/I-80/I-294 split. An easy mistake to make with all of the hwy overlap in the border area.

I go through, Rockford. Straight down the middle of IL. Through Paduca. Don’t do Chicago.

If you pull out the good ole map you will see at the Indiana border it is 80/90

I can take a picture for you if you wish.

I did not have a toll issue to the others I have an IPass
