I81 south to I40 West to I 55 and New Orleans

As the title says, were pulling down I 81 and stopping somewhere in the Shenandoah Valley. Then on to I-40 ,eventually to Memphis( 2 days). Then Vicksburg( 2 days) and New Orleans for 5 days.Any suggestions about stops or things to see? Their all about 250-300 mile days. Thanks in advance!

In Memphis, stay at Elvis Presley Campground which sits behind Heartbreak Hotel on EP Blvd (aka Hwy 51 South). For one ticket you can go thru Graceland, see his costumes, all his gold and platinum albums, see his vehicles (cars and motorcycles) and his airplanes. You can spend an entire day doing this. The campground is gated with 24 hr security. You should also go to the Peabody Hotel and see the March of the Ducks. Memphis also has a beautiful zoo.

We like the tom Sawyer's Mississippi River Park in West Memphis, AR. Be sure to check their web sight. The river can get a bit wild in the spring.

We've been on your route lots of times. Let me know if you have any specific questions. The sites I would recommend are through VA and off to US 15, Gettysburg, Hershey, the homes of Madison and Jefferson along with some Civil War battle sites.

The Vicksburg battlefield is quite interesting.

In New Orleans, be careful around the French Quarter, crime is up. Don't be bashful about using a taxi to go a mile or so. Tipitina's across from the Convention Center has great food, music. Be sure to take the Mississippi River cruise, has a great evening dinner cruise on the Natchez.

Coming back, swing east along 10 and visit Biloxi.

I would avoid i-40 west through downtown Nashville on your way to memphis. Lots of traffic, lots of pot holes, lack of courteous drivers.

I would recommend the 840 loop to avoid the Nashville mess.

If you are interested in stopping for the night, cedars of lebanon state park east of nashville is nice and not too far from the interstate.

I 40 west bound between Knoxville & Crossville there are 2 construction zones about 2 miles apart that have the right lane closed and major back ups, just a heads up.

If you stay at Graceland, take the pink limo to Marlowes for some good BBQ. Try the hunka hunka apple pie with ice cream. Mmmmmmmmmm good.

Where do you stay in new Orleans?

In NO, we always stay at Jude RV Park on Chef Mentour Hwy. it's a gated park, not really glamorous but it has a pool and it's very safe and friendly. Very reasonably priced. Very convenient for getting around.

We booked Bayou Segnette State Park, Westwego, LA several months ago because of reviews on campgroundreviews.com, but didn't get to stay because of a change in plans.

The only place I've stayed was koa west in Kenner. I-10 exit to Williams blvd, west to river road, left a few blocks. It was better than expected and in a good location for me. Was there for RV show at Pontchartrain center. Never went downtown.

We have stayed at Fontainebleau State Park, St. Bernard State Park and most recently, the Sheridan on Canal street. (Amtrak mini vacation)
Fontainebleau State Park was the best.
