McCarthy Alaska

Pulled out of Valdez this morning and was going to dry camp somewhere around Chitina. Got into Chitina- ain't much there went on around to the Copper River bridge area which was wall to wall with people dip netting Salmon. There were a couple sites that looked ok but I said WTH lets just go ahead and pull this rig on into McCarthy today. Bandit (dog) wasn't too thrilled with the idea but what do dogs know anyway. Out of the 58 miles 10 were sort of paved and big dips and heaves, the gravel was a little washboard and dusty but I got it done OK. Forget Glacierview CG they don't have big enough spots for a 5th wheel. Found a spot down by the river, just a parking spot with a fire ring and picnic table for $20 but the scenery is well worth it.

Is that the mine from the TV show? Did they finally get it safe?

The main attraction is the old Ore Concentrator mill which processed the ore from mines farther up the mountain. The ore was transported down to the mill by a tramway.
I believe the mine in the TV series is up on a mountain quite a ways above the town and mill site.

Hi did you drive the truck & trailer to McCarthy or just the truck? how bad was the road? Have heard it is very narrow and easy to slide off. I will try to visit McCarthy in 2018 as I hear it is a very beautiful location and worth the visit.

Looking for feed back Tim

Yup, drove the truck and 5th wheel all the way in. Slow and easy does it. It was dry and dusty and a lot of 25mph stretches. If you see a pullout take it for a breather as they are few. The road could get nasty if it were raining but I don't think you would slide off unless you were totally not paying attention.
Top off your gas at Kenny Lake and pack everything away nice and tight. I use masking tape to secure cabinet doors and the fridge. Once there you will find a big gravel parking lot with a guy taking money as it is private property. All you will get is a parking spot, no utilities so you will need to drive in with a full tank of water. Kenny Lake has water and a dump station.
