Polar bears eat grizzlies, who eat black bears, too. Or they could.

I would have to ride an elephant into bear territory to be unafraid. But then, I'm an old wimp.
Bears up here in the north country are misunderstood by outsiders. Typically, bears do not want to be around humans. They do not "hunt" humans, and 99% of the time they'll run away. Where people get in trouble is not caring for their foodstuffs, or food wastes properly while hiking or camping. Another situation where folks get in trouble is when they see some playful cubs rummaging around a turn-out and want to get as close as possible. Bad idea! You may not spot her, but the sow (mama bear), is close by. DO NOT RISK GETTING IN BETWEEN HER AND HER CUBS! She will attack. Lastly, hiking through the wild do not be quiet. You do not want to sneak up on a bear eating berries. Chances are the bear will feel startled and cornered, and will attack. It's instinct. If you get into a situation where you're close enough for bear spray things are not going to go well. It is best to let any bears around know you are coming by using a whistle or bells while walking. Many hikers/campers use marine portable air horns while out in the wild such as these:

Has anyone crossed the Canadian border carrying Frontiersman Bear Spray? Trying to find out if the Border authorities will confiscate Bear Spray being brought in from the USA
Bear spray is legal as long as it is marked as such. I was asked by the Border patrol about weapons including mace, i responded with no, but I do have Bear spray. There was no issue and it was less than 2 weeks ago

When it comes to bear spray remember one thing, "you don't spit into the wind."

I had the Canadians make me sacrifice my bear spray to the "crown" when I crossed back in 1998. They tore my bronco and boat apart looking for a pistol, which I had ammo for. Maybe they were just mad that they couldn't find it so they made me pay with something. They were not very nice at all, though they didn't find my pistol.

I had a good look at a brand new Crossroads Cruiser 30 ft Fifth Wheel my neighbor took to Alaska. He bought it for the trip. Other than some dirt they made it from Southern Ontario all the way to Alaska and back, Spent 4 months on the road. Even has Towmax Blowmax Bombs for tire.

Now selling it along with old Crossroad Fiver and new Alsaka Seasoned Fiver to buy a new Fiver.

When my younger brother emigrated to Canada from the UK a few years ago he thought bear spray was to be applied in a similar fashion to mosquito spray, meaning that, "the bears have to be really, really close for it to be effective, don't they? And, surely, they'd still bite you?"

Sometimes I wish I hadn't said anything to correct him. It would have been so funny to see him dowsing himself with a can before he went for a hike, much like he would have done with a can of "off" mosquito repellent.

Bear spray is the only spray can that I know of...that has a recoil when you pull the trigger. Man that shoots a long way.

I have made the Alcan trip 7 times since 2013.
I guess its all in your perspective but I really enjoy the challenge and the trip.
Yes, I have had to make repairs and fix flats but where else can you see those sites and enjoy that solitude.
I really like the Canadian folks we encounter and especially enjoy the Yukon. The Canadians have a great sense of humor and enjoy their whiskey.
I like to go early and come back late in the season to avoid the crowds. I have used chains to get over Seamboat and even been in the ditch with the trailer once.
I am going in the spring again and can't wait!!

We were camping in Douthat State Park in VA last week and a lady with 2 dogs was attacked by a black bear. She was rushed to hospital with leg injuries. So it's not just in Canada and Alaska you need bear spray.
