Oh what a trip!!
Just realized that I have not updated this post. What an amazing adventure we had. The coach performed very well with only a few hiccups along the way. I would like to give a huge shout out to Rocky Mountain Cummins for getting us in and putting a new fuel pump into our generator as a walk in! They were great and we only lost a few hours of time.
The route I had posted was mostly followed and was an aggressive trip as far as time on the road, we modified a little and passed a destination or two in order to stay 2 nights in a location and catch our breath. Another audible was called upon arriving in Death Valley and it was like 115 degrees at 6 pm, we gassed up and chugged to Las Vegas for the night scoring a campsite at Circus Circus casino and spending the next morning at the pool and playing on the water slides.
We hit several National parks and many state parks. We stopped at the Corn Palace, Wall Drug, Cadillac ranch and the Big Texan restaurant, just to name a few. We met new friends and connected with some old ones as well, it was an adventure that we will not soon forget.
Obviously our highlights are the amazing National parks including Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, Zion, Mammoth cave and I’m probably forgetting one or two. But I also want to tell you all about the great state parks and other camping area we found along the way.
Being from New England and having camped my entire life I have always had an idea that state run campgrounds are crowded, offer few amenities and are difficult to get into during peak season, this being said there are a few that I absolutely love going to when we can score a site. My eyes were opened to some amazing state run campgrounds across this country with lush green grass, plenty of room and some with full hookups. I will list the ones we really enjoyed, most were only for a night but these are places I would stay at again if we were passing through.
Mill Creek, Berlin OH,, Pokagon State Park, Angola, IN,, Rock Creek State Park, Kellogg IA,, Lake Vermillion State Rec Area, Canistota, SD,, Horsethief Lake, Black Hills National Forest, Mount Rushmore, SD,, William Kent, Tahoe City, CA,, Sylvan Lake State Park, Eagle, CO,, John Martin Reservoir State Park, Hasty, CO,, Foss State Park, Foss, OK,, Johnsons Shut-Ins State Park, Middlebrook, MO,,
We did stay in Yellowstone and had a few commercial campgrounds and KOA’s along the way but was super impressed with all of these state run parks. One that deserves a special shout out is Johnson Shut-ins, this was the most remote park, not easy to get to, no highways nearby and not much else to do but man was it COOL! I am so glad we did not skip this park. The kids (and I) had so much fun playing and swimming in the shut in’s, if you’re in the area go check it out.
I will attempt to attach some photos. Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas or whatever holiday you celibate and a happy new year! See you at the campground!
