Thanks Herk - that's an example of the most numerous variants of the Boeing B-47, a B47E complete with external fuel tanks (underwing between numbers 4,5 and 6 engines in this photo) that held approximately 1700 gallons of jet fuel each and were jettisonable (sp) in flight.
This is one of the main military aircraft that helped keep the Cold War from heating up - we fielded 28 bomb wings with them at the height of the Cold War.
Thanks again

Looks like a great trip! The boneyard is a fantastic place for us aviation folks. Did you see any former Willow Grove E-models there? I know there are a few there, 7776 still had the tail flash on it last time I was through DM.
Great pictures though!

If you're speaking of boneyards in the sense of storing aircraft, there are several for storing civil aircraft - Roswell,NM, Goodyear,AZ, Victorville,CA to mention just a few, but the boneyard in Tucson,Az is the prime one for storing, preserving, returning stored military aircraft to service for all the U.S. military aircraft that are surplus to operational needs.

The DM "Boneyard" (they hate that moniker) has military aircraft from all services including the Coast Guard now.
It is divided into two HUGE areas, one for "Flyable Storage" and one for "Parting Out."
Nothing goes to waste there. After every salvageable part is removed (which can take YEARS), the remaining aluminum is shredded and scrapped. AMARG generates hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue a year.

His handle escapes me at the moment, but our friend from Weatherford was there also - is a glider guy and works for the Union Pacific RR - nice guy.

Correct - the formal U.S.A.F.name for the facility is the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group.
There are several different phases of storage for surplus military aircraft depending on the aircraft type - some aircraft are there for a set period of time, others are there for an indefinite period of time and others are on Death Row there ( they are chopped up for aluminum and other salvageable items and will never fly again - very sad).
Some aircraft there are in storage to provide hard to get parts or parts that are no longer manufactured for their still flying counterpart types (B-52 and KC-135 are two that come to mind - Boeing never thought that certain models of the B-52 and KC-135 would still be flying fifty years after production ended.)
As Lou stated, the facility generates millions of dollars each year and I have heard it said that it is the only U.S. government agency that actually returns revenue to the government.
Do a Goggle and you will find some interesting facts about the facility.

Looks to be some C-141B's, some later model B-52 's ( I'm guessing G models) and possibly cut-up B- 52's ( not sure).

Check this website out
Davis Monthan Air Base - Air Force Boneyard
Or just Goggle Map " Davis Monthan Air Force Base, Tucson, AZ "
and zoom in and look at all the different planes.
