Why stay in a hotel when you are towing a trailer. We just pulled from Oregon to our home in Texas. Stayed one night at an RV park that has hot springs, and one night in a tuck park at a Truck Stop (T and A). I don't like the engines running all night, but I am usually pretty tired so I don't notice it. You can get a great breakfast and a hot shower at the truck stop. Clean private locked bathrooms.
Next night stayed at a RV park that had a steak house. WOW.
Then home. I have stayed in Walmart parking lots, too. I go in, buy something for supper, and maybe some diesel treatment, talk to the manager, and park where the others are parked.

Ca to Charlotte nc
I'd tak I-40 all the way to 321 south to I85. Just made the trip to Ca on I-40 and came back on I-80. Had a dusting of snow at higher elevations in it & wy.

Which Route
My neighbor just moved his kid back to North Carolina with a large trailer full of stuff and a car. He went I-40 and said it worked well. He left from the San Francisco area.

Yep, what Peter suggests. Must be a trucker. Lol On I-40 or the northern routes you may hit ice. I-10 and I-20 should still be clear. Wave as you come through Texas!

X's 2 I-40 stay south your still will have to go through Albuquerque NM. which believe it or not is a higher elevation then Denver. But you really don't know your climbing, I went from Virginia to Calf. 3 years ago. Be ready for culture shook, I moved from SF to Clarksville Va. The Charlotte area is nice, but it is NOT CALIFORNIA...Good luck on your move..   PS: you can make it 5 long long days, but I would plan 7 if I were you...

I would just get on I-40east and follow it all the way to I-77south in NC at Statesville and go on down to Charlotte, NC.
I drove from central NC to Lawton OK twice this summer and we drove I-40 from NC to OKC both times coming and going. Road work here and there but a good drive overall. I was pulling a 38ft 5th wheel out, left it and then returned 10 weeks later to bring it back home. 1250 miles from here to there and so I made it to CA each trip just never past OK.

I am completely jealous! I would give a limb to be in the Charlotte area. That is exactly where we want to go. Our house was on and off the market for 3 years and never sold. Best of luck with your trip and your new job!

Better to get off I40 just before Hickory onto Hwy 321 South to Gastonia and then East on I85, I77 is a nightmare all the time both directions.
BTW, OP's tt storage problem has been solved.

Ejs4029 has parked his camper at OC's storage unit, had all the tanks drained, water lines drained, anode removed from water heater and will be moved to his assigned lot in about a week. Welcome to NC Ed! Congratulations on selling your house in CA. It was a real pleasure meeting you and your father. Good luck at your new job.
Interesting that Ed's 2016 has stab jack motor on each corner of the trailer. They are pretty quick and quiet also.

Thanks for all your help Neil....It was a smooth trip 2462 miles with no problems...I averaged 13.0 Miles per gallon for the trip

Ejs4029 moved his trailer from the front yard to his assigned spot alongside the garage, got it winterized for NC. (antifreeze in the drains and toilet, low point drains opened, anode removed, tanks drained, etc)
Ed can hook up to electric as soon as we leave for FL.
