Permanent Move - Leaving CA For NC Which Route ?

It's been awhile since I've been on the forum lot's of things going on I'm moving from Southern CA to Charlotte, NC for a new job opportunity. I am excited and nervous at the same time.

I am planning on towing my Rockwood 2703 to storage facility in NC at the end of this month my plan is to make the 2500 miles in 5-6 days which I think is doable averaging about 500 miles per day. The plan is to just stop at motel along the way to maximize time on the road.

I am undecided about which route to take so I would appreciate any input I was try to choose between the following two Routes 40 to Rt. 22 to Rt. 85 or Route 10 to Rt. 20 to Rt. 85 or if there is a better way let me know what you thoughts are.

Oh and I'm sure once I get somewhat settled in NC I am going to have a bunch of questions about the area and where to go camping.

If you want a SHORT term storage, pm me. We will be here in Concord until the week after Thanksgiving. Costs would be very minimal.

Welcome to NC! Good luck with your move. Lots of great camping not far from you. Just ask when you are ready. Sorry I can't help with route info. I am just under 2 hours from Charlotte over between Greensboro and Durham.

hope your move goes well,..... we find welcome centers and rest stops allow us to maximize our travel time the most,..... drive till tired, stop, sleep, get up and go..... some do have "no overnight parking" signs, but we've never found one where that was enforced, there has always been other overnight'ers in every one,.... and of course the truckers are always there,.... just a thought.....

where in cal. if near I10 take it to I20 then to I85 you would pick up I85 on east side of Atlanta from I285

Welcome to NC! SC and NC have great State Parks.


Personally I would take I-40 all the way to Asheville then I-26 to Columbus NC and then 74 East to I-85 just east of Kings Mtn NC and then to Charlotte.

Just returned from LA area to western NC. Used I-40 and had no problems. Good drive. Took 6 days and stayed in KOAs. Believe it is a little shorter than the I-10 route.

I'd stay on I40 THROUGH Tennessee to Knoxville/Ashville...then down I26 to 74 and 85 into Charlotte...Avoiding Atlanta entirely. Have DONE this. It is fine and a nicer drive than I10 & prolly quicker too.
Suggest you also look at CrackerBarrel as an alternate to motels if you want to save some bucks...many have RV spaces and almost all are off an interstate. Buy breakfast & hit the road!

X-2 never had a problem in rest areas

I would do I-40 to NC 301 near Hickiry NC to I-85 you would avoid a pretty steep grade in I-26, but either works, welcome to NC we mostly camp at the beach but there are lots of choices mountains, low land and beaches

I would take I 40 to Hwy 321 down to Gastonia to I 85 to Charlotte.

Perhaps he decided he would rather have California earthquakes to deal with than NC hurricanes.
