Red Bluff to Eureka
Hey gang. We are gonna be taking a couple weeks in September and driving up to portland, oregon for our daughters wedding. Im trying to plot stops along the way and wanted to head up 101 from Eureka on up. My question is, which road to take from redbluff over. 299 or 36?
i did a search and read a few old threads on here but havent seen anything recent. Google maps shows a crapload of construction on 299. My signature has my TV and TT. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You can head out 36 from Red Bluff then take the Hayfork turnoff to 299. 36 is a very slow winding road the rest of the way. Great for cars but NOT towing. Or just head north to Redding and take 299 off of I-5 and head over.

I agree about taking Highway 299. I have towed a boat on Highway 36 and would avoid it with a RV. 299 is smooth, fairly straight with less curves and scenic. Enjoy your trip!

They are right! 36 is one of the best sports car roads in the state, but would be miserable with an RV!

Been to Eureka several times via 299. Would avoid it at all costs if your towing large RV.
It's steep in places and very windy. If had passengers get car sick....too.

299 is a horible drive. Several climbs and decents. Your far better to either south on I5 and take 20 or north on I5 and take 199 from Grants Pass.

People use 299 all the time.....I towed over it many times with no problems.

Regarding using 20, from what ive read, 101 between bragg and leggett is to be avoided also. or is it hiway 1 is the one to avoid?!?! So now im even more confused?!?!?!?

You're confused.
It's highway 1 between ft Bragg and leggett, that should be avoided.
101 is fine all the way
