Smartphone app recommendation
Look on the App Store for "Glympse". It's free. Anyone who is traveling and wants the folks back home (or those you're heading toward) to know where they are can set up a periodic broadcast of their GPS coordinates to whichever recipient(s) they wish. They can monitor your progress as long as you want. You can set the program to stop sending coordinates when you arrive, or after a certain period of time, or you can stop it manually. Only those you choose can see the reports, and only when you want them to. The recipient does not need to have a smartphone or this app, only needs Internet access. Wish I'd had this app and a smartphone on our Alaska trip.
It will also run on an iPad with 3G, since that has a GPS chip in it. I don't know if there's an Android version but I wouldn't be surprised.
