As far as the other guy, play stupid games, win stupid prizes. But looking at the vid, he could have easily made that turn without hitting the guard rail. He just took a bad angle the first time. I don't know if insurance covers stupidity. It usually doesn't.

Sometimes they haul out the "Owner Accepted Risk" clause...

As someone who has used a winch hundreds of times in many different off road recovery situations (and instructed "Jeep 101 and 201" basic and advanced recovery techniques,) I was cringing at multiple points throughout this video. There are so many rules of safe winching being broken here, I don't even know where to start. Practically everyone that you can see in the field of video (including the woman filming at times) is in the "kill zone." If that cable had snapped trying to pull that much weight backwards and sideways, it could have very easily killed someone. No winch weight or even a sweatshirt on the cable to knock it down, and the guy who's quarterbacking the play hopping back and forth across the live tensioned winch cable is just priceless. The whole lot of them were f-ing lucky. It was almost a live action Darwin Award ceremony.

I can easily see something like that happening if you don't know the roads. A couple of years ago, the missus and I missed a turn, and didn't realize it until it was too late. The road kept on getting narrower and narrower, with no place to turn our rig around. Low trees contributed to the uneasiness. If we would have met another car, I don't think we could get past each other. Thank goodness, the road finally got wider and eventually came out on major highway.

I looked at that video twice and still don't understand why the driver couldn't make that turn safety. There's plenty of shoulder and unless the RV driver was forced over the shoulder by another driver,it seems like the turn could have been negotiated safety. He would have to crowd over into the oncoming lane,but it could IMO be done.

Granted its a sharp hairpin turn even after the turn where the driver went off,but as you can see, the RV continued around the second half of turn after he was pulled back on the road.

I saw the warning sign and Yes he shouldn't have been there,but he was,so maybe I'm missing something here.

And FWIW, I totally agree with the previous poster who talked about the danger of being that close to the winch cable and the danger that presents.

I was raised on a farm where heavier chains that the winch cable were used and when they broke swung around with a great force and probably would have killed anyone in their arc.

B47, I agree. I did a couple of hairpin turns on my first trip with the big camper when I went to Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville, AL. I just waited for a moment and swung really wide.

I guess we’ll never know why he didn’t negotiate that turn. Perhaps he became so mentally rattled and muddled after losing his A/C and awning to that tunnel that he failed to prepare for the immediate hairpin turn. It wouldn’t be the first time that one mistake would lead to an even worse mistake. I can almost see this guy trading in that Montana on a B+ RV after that nightmare.
