Trip to rapid citySD.

Hi Friends, the family and I are heading to Rapid City SD. On the 20th of July. We are leaving from SE minnesota in the AM and hopefully arriving in the PM. Is anyone going our way or will be there that week? We enjoy great company. BTW we will have our 16yo son and 14yo daughter with us.
Also for the ones who have been there done that,,,,,this is our first trip there, is there anything we should not miss? We will be doing the tours of MT Rushmore and Chief Crazyhorse, hopefully the badlands, (any help going through there is appreciated) and Wal-Drug (DW and DD love "junk shops") any thing else to look for or at? All posts will be taken to heart. Thanks all.

Heading out there myself on 22nd for 2 days only. Darn job gets in the way of staying longer. Departing from Big Stone Lake, Minnesota. Looks like we have the same itinerary. Bringing my 8 y/o travel companion.

Don't miss the lighting ceremony at the Faces and go to Crazy Horse.

It was cool and wet when we were there last month but a great trip just the same.
Got to Rushmore then Crazy Horse which I consider a must.
Plan on at least three hours at CH just to see some of the things there.
Dead Wood is a great stop as is Lead.
We beat a path thru Sturgis and a couple other places along the way.

Cindy and I just got back from Glacier and on the way up we spent 4 nights at Rapid City. Stayed at Myster Mountain RV (next to Bear Country). Had a great time. Custer State Park was good but needed to get off on the side roads to see all the bison, prarie dogs, etc. Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse a must also. Went to some great falls up around Spearfish. Deadwood and Lead is good too. More to do there than we had time. Did drive back to Wall Drug and the Badlands. My opinion is that for photos the morning or afternoon are good times for Badlands. Also swung by Mitchell SD on the way to Rapid City (from Kansas City) for the Corn Palace.

How about campground or RV park recommendations? We were there several years ago and they all seemed pretty crowded and little room between sites.

Custer State Park was great! We camped at Rafter J Bar and enjoyed our stay. We went through the Badlands on way home and am glad we didn't miss out, they were great.

Murdo SD has great museum right on highway--pioneer auto museum --campground just one block west of it---go into badlands at the East entrance (visitor center is there). Drive the 26 miles thru park and you will exit at Wall SD. wall drugs there. Cool place- couple campgrounds there too-- Custer state park is great. If you drive coach thru the view is awesome. You see over the top of all cars. Drive the needles hwy in your toad.
