Why do we feel the need to camp?

Question I cannot answer myself:
where does this "yearning" to camp comes from?
ever since a little girl, I've wanted most of all to go camping.
This is what brought me to the Army lifestyle!
Now I'm retired, and been watching RV's drive by and realized the yearning never went away.
We live in the country, where the fireflies, birds and wildlife are abundant. In a nice big comfortable home but yet, I want to travel in a truck, crowded with dogs and belongings up and down hills with a 5800 lbs trailer attached.
Some think I've lost my mind.

You and literally millions of others are asking the same thing. We all must be a little wacky to leave a perfectly nice, comfortable home to go somewhere and sit outside and have a different set of pests to contend with.

I leave a log home in the woods near a major MN lake to go to different woods and lakes! Just an urge you can't ignore.

My wife and our family live in a rural community in NS.In this community we live in a nice big newer two story home with lots of room.As boubou said we also love to camp. The way we see it we figure we go camping to see people,as our closest neighbor is a km away and we are the last house on our road looking over the bay.I guess you probably want to camp to get away from the lifestyle you are accustomed to for just a while.

I've been camping most of my life. Mom and Dad owned tents, tt, MH's. I've owned tents, pop ups and now tt.
It's not so much a "need" for me, but rather a "choice". Just a something I enjoy doing.

My wife and I camp to get away from work! We both work from home so we basically live at work. It's our getaway..

it may have to do with a change of routine. No matter what, there's always some type of work to do around the house, if not, same routine. Away in a campground, different routine, different people and lots of fun

DW and I are both "A" type people. No matter how hard we try we can not spend a weekend at home and do nothing. Our house is on the back of a 23 acre lot in the woods. Campfire in the front yard, deck overlooking a pond etc. No matter how hard we ty the only way we can take a week off is to ESCAPE - CAMP.

Well! all your answers make me feel a lot better!
I thought I was eccentric wanting to get away from our country house. I wondered if most people doing this came from apartments or crowded neighbourhoods. now I wonder if most come from similar places I live in. Nice quiet peaceful country livin'.

I crave the adventure and exploring. We used to do it all from hotel rooms *argh but missed the dogs and our own pillows and sheets
also, I could NOT stand to be in a hotel room any longer than nescessary, ie" get up,shower and get out!!!
camping is different" get up, make coffee, drink 1 2 3 cups of coffee, oh lookit, it's 10 am! better take a shower if we want to go anywhere! so much nicer

We, like many of our friends enjoy the getaway. We normally plan trips with friends that also have RVs. Lately at least once a month. It give us a venue to get together; cook, drink, play cards; just get away from the daily grind. We've planned events such as a ski trip in RVs, drag them half way across the country to go skiing! Just love the lifestyle.

X2. I work from home too, so even on the weekends, I still feel like I'm "at the office". Camping is our time to escape from work and leave the stresses of life behind if only for a little while. That, and making family memories that will last a lifetime is why we do it.

Great thread. I think that part of the draw of camping is that it is cozy. Living small, we are more together, and we are required to reduce our "stuff" to the essentials. George Carlin used to say that he was happiest when all of his stuff could fit in his car! I have also wondered if there is some primitive, nomadic urge at work that causes us to want to have a "mobile" home. We camped a good bit with a pop-up when our kids were little, and have wonderful memories of those trips. We then quit camping for 10 years or so. When we went out again this spring we had a blast and were reminded of how much we enjoyed it. So a new camper has been ordered! I am excited!

My co workers say the same thing.. Why are you camping just 20 miles from your house? Why bother with all that when you could stay home? They just don't "understand" the need or desire to camp?

We CAMP when we go to nearby campground (100 miles or less) We RV when we take longer trips (101 miles or more). We HOTEL when we go see our kids in Iowa and Missouri.

We like many others we live on 23 A of woods and grass with a creek and pond with all kinds of wildlife, so we take the trailer somewhere to get a break and see this great country of ours and meet some nice people along the way. A lot of unnoticed benefits of CAMPing, RVing , and Hoteling that are priceless is there?

What ever you call it and why you do it, just keep on persuing it.

My husband and I both work full time and we've started a small woodcrafting business from home that keeps us busy almost every night until 10pm. On most weekends we have a craft show to sell our wares. We've now combined our craft shows with our favorite pastime - camping! But before we started the business, we still went camping frequently - 61 days last year. Its an opportunity to escape the "real" world for a few days. No work, no bills, etc. You just sit back, relax, and don't think about what is facing you when you get back to reality. It's a chance to spend time with friends and family and leave your cares behind, for just a little while. I've often said I could live in our TT 24/7/365, and someday, if our dreams come true, we will be doing just that.

Had this view from our campsite this past weekend. It was sad and depressing to have to come home.....

I think getting out in the camper is a major stress reliever. 'Changing the walls' seems to change the things I think and worry about.
