WV to Colorado....boondock or not?

Hi Folks, Reservations are made camper is being serviced and I'll be heading for Leadville, Co. mid July for two weeks. This will be the longest trip yet pulling the 5th wheel which dosen't bother me. The thing I am not sure about is the couple nights on the road getting there. So far I'm thinking about just pulling in at a rest area to sleep as long as overnight parking isn't prohibited.

What are your thoughts on that? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Joe

Where are you guys staying in Leadville? Lots of nice CGs in the surrounding area. In fact, we're going to spend a few nights at Twin Lakes (just south of Leadville) mid - late July. Spending the week of the 4th in Gunnison and Blue Mesa

boondock it is then........

Thanks mtnguy, and bikendan. I'm going to go with my origional plan and use the rest stops for sleeping.

seven_campers, I'm staying at the Sugar Loafin campground near Turquoise Lake. I'll be traveling alone this trip since my wife can't make it this time. I'll be there from 6/11 - 6/22 so maybe it'll work out I can stop by and say Howdy. Happy trails.

You have Super Walmart as a backup in case rest areas don't allow overnite stays.

I would only stay overnight at a Walmart if there were other campers there. There has been an increasing incidence of robberies, and even a murder at one.
At the rest areas, there are always others there, including truckers, and I am sure they would be quick to come to anyone's aid in the case of trouble.

Interesting - I had not heard of problems. I would think that rest areas would be more dangerous - as you are dependent on who might be there vs a store where there are possibly security cameras, guards, shoppers etc. Stores aren't as isolated - help could respond more quickly etc.

I have not yet seen a Walmart without other campers so perhaps it's all a moot discussion.
