8281ss first trip

Hallo, we took our new 2012 8281SS out for its first trip down to Florida. I must say, I am impressed with the handling of the trailer while towing it down the interstate. We have a Ram 1500 Mega Cab with Hemi. The 5th wheel is right at the edge of our vehicle weight rating. We packed it with lots of gear and I installed Firestone air support. To share the good news, we made it there (1390miles) and back. The truck burned a average of 9.2 to 9.5 MPG @ 65-70MPH.
When I drafted behind semi trucks it even went up to ! 10MPG ! @ 65 MPH.
The down side: the torque sucks. Next truck will be a Diesel.
To all you gasoline truck guys out there, FYI: It can be done. Take it easy and do expect race car performance. If you don't pull in hills or Colorado, do not fear the 5th wheel.

The Tundra 5.7 can handle that and then some but the mpg is about the same. It has over 400 lbs of torque and 381 hp. It is a beast.

Just purchased our new chaparral 26rls and tow it home for the first time this sat. I am a little lighter than you with pin weight and dry weight so this makes me feel all that much better about my purchase. My 07 1500 ram may get airbags depending on the sag I get once its loaded with gear. Congrats on the new rig

Glad you had a great trip with your new Rockwood. It looks like a great setup. One suggestion though, drafting behind an 18 wheeler is not a good idea. I hope you have many great trips with your fifth wheel.
