Hi all, looks like I found the right place to get some info on trailers. Right now we have a pop up tent trailer, but we are moving on up. Our problem right now is that we need a bigger truck to get a bigger trailer. Will be fun looking at trailers once we get a truck.

We have been looking at Dodge Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra, used of course. Expensive but necessary if we want to upgrade trailer.

Be very careful regarding payload capacity with 1/2 tons. My tundra is maxed out with my 5800 lbs 28ft BH. The TT has 950 lbs of tongue weight. My Tundra only has 1580 lbs payload capacity. Runs out real fast. Just make an educated decision.

Hyundai Santa Fe tow capacity is only 2700lbs max

We will have to be careful with the trailer, to match the truck. Difficult sometimes without seeing the trailer as some ppl advertise them as being able to be towed with an SUV or Van. Big van I guess. Thanks for your advice, we have a lot to learn yet.

1/2ton Ram would run about 5k lbs to 9k lbs depending on the model. I had a 1/2ton and found I was running close to max with my 8k lbs trailer. I upgraded to a 3/4 Diesel and will never turn back. But you can find some really nice travel trailers in the 5k lbs range that a 1/2 ton with the right tow package can handle. Dodge 1500 Big Horn w/5.9 Hemi is rated at about 9k lbs towing and 1.5k lbs payload.

I would go ahead and look at trailers and get a good idea of the type of trailer that will meet your needs (not to purchase right now but to get the weights of these trailers). Once you have a good idea of the weight ranges and the payloads of the trailers you like, you will have a better idea of the truck you should be looking for.
