we did a similar thing, back in 2006. we drove to Chicago and back, a 4000 mile round trip but we still saved over $4,000 even after trip costs.
West Coast dealers know most customers won't make such a trip, even to save a bunch of money, so they jack up prices and even inflate delivery costs so they can make a profit on that too.

Thanks to this forum and all the time I have been able to learn it's our hope the PDI will be thorough and will know the things to look for and ask the right questions. after many years of driving big trucks doubles and triples and now piggy back sometimes 4 trucks 97' long I am concerned about this first time with a 5er(my truck my 5er and my money)

Take a PDI Checklist like this one:
http://www.angelfire.com/trek/buenav...PDI_V113_2.pdf
It'll force you and the tech doing the walk through to be methodical and cover everything.
Not on the list, but don't forget to take a DVD to test out the DVD player and surround sound.

A smartphone can be handy if you need to video tape something or take pictures. Let us know how your big trip goes. We are here if you have any questions.

Ron,
What is your concern? If it is pulling a 5er, I think you will be pleasently surprised - if not downright delighted!
We pulled a TT for several years - the last time being when we traded up to a 5er last year and towed our TT 100+ miles for trade in. Went to the RV dealer, hooked up the 5er and pulled out and DW's & my first comment was "is it still back there?!?" Honestly, you will be amazed - no sway, no hitch shimmy, no "vortex effect" when a semi blasts past you at 95
Just a nice smooth pull - and with that beast of a TV you own you probably won't even notice hills too much

You will be amazed at how fast you become comfortable towing a 5er. No sway, no vortex pull, and no strained hands from griping the steering wheel. When you do your walk through I suggest taping or recording the parts you are least comfortable with. So much information is given that it becomes easy to miss something. Have a great trip.

WE MADE IT What a awesome trip we are so happy with the new Silverback 29ik. The folks at RV Nation were great to deal with ,they had everything ready when we got their on Monday. Took about 4hrs for the walk through and didn't find anything that needed fixed before we could head back to Washington.
They say it rains in the Northwest but let me tell you IT RAINS IN OHIO. Had 1 1/2 in. of rain non Monday. Went to a rv park about 20 miles from the dealer for our first set up to get acquainted with everything we are so happy that every thing worked right. Thank you Forest River for the good build.
Took 5 days to get home and had good weather all the way. A bit cold at night, but sunshine every day. Now the wind was another matter Ia,Ne,Wy and Ut 30 + mph wind. The TV was GREAT didn't hold us back at all, just used a bit more fuel. It was all good.
