First "big" camper, SV291
Hi Everyone,
Well, we've camped a bunch over the years with our kids, tent camping first, then we bought a Coleman pop-up in the early 90's, then life got in the way so a long hiatus. My son still has the old pop-up and it's still in pretty good condition. We had an old 15' blue tri hull boat w/ 85hp Suzuki (the Smurf Boat) and we'd go to COE Mt. Carmel on Clark's Hill lake. Wonderful, fun filled times.
I'm approaching retirement in a few years and my grand kids aren't getting any younger so we decided we'd take the plunge.
So, now we're back. For some reason, camping is just a ton of fun. It's a lot of work, but it's fun work and helps everyone to realize that if we work together, we can do a lot in a short time and feel accomplished. There's nothing like relaxing around the campfire after you've set up and got everything just the way you like it.
We usually go two families, at least, one truck tows the old (not fancy) pontoon, one tows the pop-up.(or now the SV291)
Me and my Sweetie of almost 42 years decided to get a "real" camper. So, we bought a SV291. We should be able to pull it with our '99 Silverado Z71 (5.3l) with no problem.
We were looking at a 30' Americamp model, but it weighed 6100lbs, close to the max towing weight for the truck and I was just nervous about that, even though it had more room.
We haven't taken delivery yet, but hopefully we'll get it next week some time.
Y'all wish us luck with this. I'm an accomplished electrician, mechanic and jury-rigger par excellence... so I can fix most anything. (not bragging, just a lot of experience and I listen very closely to those who are willing to share information, thank you all!) I have already perused this forum and there is a lot of information here that I think will help.
We're headed to Springfield on Lake Hartwell on July 11, and back again Labor day weekend. If any of y'all are in that neck of the woods, we'll be on 73.
My wife an I have big plans for retirement. Jan/Feb spent in Fla and camping elsewhere as much as we can, God willing, health permitting.
I'm looking forward to this.
