First timer newbie

Hi everyone,

Just purchased a Wolf Pup 16bhs travel trailer. We are trying to figure things out and so far it seems good. Except for backing up. Yikes. I can't believe folks make it look easy. Anyway, hello.

It may 'look easy'.... but the best of us still hit/run over, 'stuff'. Have a spotter.
Take your time and keep at it and 'down the road' someone will say, "he makes backing up look easy".

I even watched you tube videos and am telling myself everyone starts out like this and every thing I read says, practice, practice. Thanks for your words. We'll keep at it.

Now that schools are out take your camper to a school parking lot to practice. One thing I learned was to get the camper and tow vehicle straight in line with each other. Put your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel. Move your hand/wheel in the direction you want the rear of the camper to go. Yeah it's easy to over steer but practice is the key. Good luck, with time you'll be backing up in your campground spot and some newbie will think 'Wish I could back up a camper like that'.

When it doubt, start over.

Couple of quick pointers.
1. Go slow
2. Do not over steer ( wait for trailer to respond).
3. Holding steering wheel @ 6 o'clock position move hand in direction you want trailer to go.
4. If possible have someone help guide your. ( inexpensive walkie talkies are a big help).

As above slow and easy, when in doubt use the G.O.A.L method (get out and look)

Things will get easier with time and soon you will be able to make it look easy.

I end up having to park mine without help over half the time, but I get out and look at least once even with help. I like to know exactly where everything is in relation to the trailer and not rely on someone else..maybe just a little paranoid.

That is, though, probably a good habit to get into. You really need to have a good picture of where everything is when you back into somewhere. There's a lot of things to consider...overhead clearance, distance to power and water connections / slide out clearance / stabilizer jack clearance (they're fond of putting those concrete parking space stops at the end of sites here) / awning clearance and the like. It becomes second nature after awhile.

As others have said, get some road cones (we like the collapsible ones Amazon sells) and practice in a empty parking lot. After you are a pro and backing, the collapsible cones are a great addition to your roadside emergency kit!

Same for me. I like to know what's back there even if the spotter says it's good. Just gets me a good reference of what's going on and I can usually get it in 1 shot....10 tops...

Thank you. The article did help. The hand placement and raising was interesting as well as the spousal relationship. That's what happened with us. Great camping trip semi-ruined when came home and couldn't park it and were frustrated after an hour of trying to park it. Our parking space isn't that big so not a lot of maneuvering room. Again thanks.

We literally just had to park 2 big rigs at a non-big rig friendly campground. It took over almost 3 hours (included a stop in the middle for a tornado warning).

My wife and I don't yell or get crazy, fortunately. Slow and steady and lots of in and out of the truck, talking about ideas and what to do. My friend's wife said they don't do well and asked for our help in talking hubby through. At the end, we were all frazzled, but there was no angry words or feelings. (Which I'm surprised when I kept having him get out of the truck and walk it with us.)

Congrats on the new Wolf Pup! We looked at that one! We purchased a cheap pair of two way radios and I tell him "more to the driver or passenger" side as he's backing up! Works great!
