First Timers from Long Island, NY 25 foot Travel Trailer

Hello, We are Jeremy and Corinne from Long Island, we also try to spend a lot of time in Rhode Island, where we got married 2 years ago, in Narragansett. Our RV bug came around in a weird way. After our wedding we found out about some inexpensive property for sale in Narragansett. Our idea was to buy the land now and save up until we could build something on it. We had the idea to either park a Travel Trailer there or routinely bring it there when we were in town if parking it there was not legal. We looked at a number of used Travel Trailers, mostly in the 25-30 foot range, we found an older (1999) 30' bunkhouse that wasn't very attractive but was actually in very good condition and would suit our needs as an occasional beach house if we wanted to have a few guests. It turned out that the land was not legal to build on due to being on wetland and the whole idea kind of melted away. I say "kind of" because the search for a travel trailer continued with casual following of craigslist.

Fast forward to this spring and our annual camping trip was moved farther north to our friend's off-the-grid cabin with more people than sleeping accommodations. Having had some trouble in recent years tent camping we decided to up our game this year and try to RENT a camper. We eventually found one of Outdoorsy and it turned out to be a Flagstaff 23FB. We picked up the Trailer at the owner's house and had a great time boondocking, essentially, at our memorial day weekend and then went on to Burlington, Vermont "on our way home" and stayed at North Beach Campground, with full hookup. We returned the trailer the next day and it was clear. The seed had been planted, FIRMLY; we needed to get our own.

Of course we had dreams of a beautiful, shiny Airstream, but we certainly want to keep paying our mortgage, so that was out. We initially searched for the exact trailer we had rented because we had enjoyed it so much but our search wound up spreading a little bigger and smaller and to various brands, as well. We soon wound up finding the trailer we eventually bought (on craigslist) and went to see it on our way up to Rhode Island for our 2 year anniversary. It is a 2004 Flagstaff 25LB, which has the folding rear bunk bed with the small rear door that we call "The bike garage". Just a little more room to breath and store stuff than the 23FB we had rented. We slept on it for two nights and that second morning we wound up making an offer and settled on a fair price and picked it up and brought it home the next weekend.

That was a scarce 2 weeks ago, at this point. Last weekend we took our first trip to Wildwood state park, on eastern Long Island's north shore, only about an hour and a half away from home. We had an amazing weekend and spent a very relaxing day at the beach and had fun barbecuing, making some guacamole and just sitting by the fire star gazing. We already have our second trip planned, this weekend, to Narragansett, naturally! I got lucky and found an open site at the very popular Fishermen's Memorial State Park.

We are already dreaming up all the things we want to change and modify and decorate, and we already added a power tongue jack for convenience and are doing some small maintenance items like changing out a start capacitor on the A/C unit and flushing out the water heater and changing out the anode. We also ripped down all of the window valences and curtains because we found them very tacky and we're trying to modernize the interior and put our flair on it. The previous owner took very nice care of this trailer so while it may look slightly dated it is in very good condition and very clean, and we intend to keep it that way, as well as improving it to suit our taste.

Welcome from upstate NY. Nice to hear you are making the rig yours with the mods and upgrades. Now, if you can break past the metro area, there's a lot of NYS to explore, come up to the real country! God Bless, Ken

Thanks! Good to hear it, have you ever stayed at Wildwood? Even though the park was full we didn't feel crowded at all, different story in the tent section I think. Our site was very roomy and I think our neighbors were away for the night so it was a good 150 feet to the next occupied site, it seemed like. While the beach is rocky, the sunset was amazing and we had a nice time.

Very Nice! Can't wait, only about 12 hours from heading out there! I think we're in Area 2, which is just electric and water, but it's only for one night so we'll be fine with holding tanks. I think the other section closer to the water has full hookups if I recall, we're just happy to have gotten anything on such late notice. We'll certainly ride the bikes around to scout for the ideal site to aim for.

Thanks, Otego is familiar to me from when I used to go up to Watkins Glen a lot. Planning to go again at some point with the trailer, this time with living quarters instead of a car for the race track! If you have any suggestions for parks to visit in central NY we're all ears! Love Watkins Glen, we've also been to Cooperstown and Buffalo (we have friends there, and in Rochester) even Lake George, my wife went to Syracuse. All places we've been before but would like to revisit now that we can see them from a different perspective with our camper.
