Well, if you are coming from Hot Springs headed to Austin you will (should) not pass thru Fort Worth unless you are taking the scenic route.
Only ones I know of are the COE (Corps Of Engineers) or State Parks, there are quite a few in the DFW area and areas surrounding and heading South.
Let me know the route and I can point out several along the way for ya.
I have no idea about any of the private or KOA type CG's as we have never stayed at any of those.

Time permitting and in the area on the week end, Traders Village has a RV park. Located in the mid cities just off Hwy 360 in Grand Prairie. Traders Village is a very large flea market and worth a days time to walk through. Look up on the web and happy travel to Austin

The "North Texas" label for Amarillo is somewhat confusing IMO also. I lived in Lubbock at one time and that area was called the South Plains.
I was a Federal Employee and would stay overnight in Amarillo and soon learned that Amarillo encompasses both Potter and Randall counties (sp) and the Per Diem rate was different for each county, so it made a difference what county your hotel was.

I spent 6 mos. in Amarillo back in 1967. Went to Air Force basic training and tech school there, March-August. Really, no desire to go back.

I was there for what was called "second phrase" basic training after Lackland and B47 bomber tech training the last part of 1960. Those old wooden barracks sure didn't stop the wind from blowing in.

I was enjoying BT at Lackland in '67 while you were taking in Amarillo. After a couple south Texas tours, we grew to like the area and decided to retire here after putting in 30. (Thought about staying another few, but didn't want to be called a 'lifer'...)
Happy trails, Chief...

Great camping in these parts. If you find yourself south of Austin one day, give a PM shout. Hot GI coffee awaits. No 'C' rats, though...

You guys are just kids - by 1967 I had completed my 4 years as a SAC trained killer and was a happy civilian again.
Do you remember if there was still a SAC Bomb Wing at Amarillo when you were there? There was when I was there and the base was both ATC and SAC. The looser regs enjoyed by the SAC guys would drive the ATC guys nuts.

Oh yea, B-52's where there. They rotated to Guam, I think. I had to go out to the Wing a couple of times doing details. Remember thinking, "now this is the real Air Force."

Yep - that's what I'm talking about - I remember being told by some of the savvy guys I went though Amarillo with saying don't think this is how the "real Air Force" is.

Scratch,
Will be at Marble Falls, Sunset Point, June 5-10. Then we move to La Hacienda in Austin 10-15. Bring the coffee and stop by.
