When we want to camp close to home, we love Cross Winds Campground in Linwood. Very close to Spencer and Salisbury. Close to the Yadkin River. Big, wooded sites, and we love the late check-out (4 p.m.) on Sundays.
We also love dining at Pinocchio's restaurant in Spencer. A great mom-and-pop Italian place. And the best-ever hot dogs are at a hole-in-the wall called Hap's in downtown Salisbury. Wash the chili dogs down with a Cheerwine slushie.
Dan Nicholas Park in Salisbury is also a great place to camp. It's a county park with all kinds of attractions and rides located well away from the camping area. I'm talking about a zoo, paddle boats, miniature train rides, two miniature golf courses, gem mining, an aquarium... Great place, great wooded sites. No sewer, so departing on Sunday means a long line at the dump station. We usually plan on Monday departures. Check their website.
Both of these are open year-round, and we camp there throughout the winter.
