Chief Depends on what side of town you want to hang out. I can recommend Lackland AFB Famcamp, Admiralty and Blazing Star on the far west side. Ft Sam Houston has a Famcamp but I haven't been there. It is located just north of downtown. Hope it helps and safe travels.

Hi Chief...we've stayed at both Admiralty and Lackland. Lackland is okay, but pretty minimal. You have to bring your trailer in "the back way" (through the old Kelly to Lackland connector road), but it's not that big a deal. If you have pets, you have to be careful due to stickers that tend to run rampant in their grass.

Admiralty is nice, but fairly expensive. And the sites are pretty close together. But the are all concrete and level. Some are just barely big enough for both trailer and tow vehicle. But the location is great (right next to Sea World and close to Lackland on the Northwest side).

I have not stayed at Blazing Star, but it looks nice. Again, a bit on the expensive side, and the sites look pretty cramped there also. But once again, close to Sea World and Lackland.

I've also stayed at Stone Creek RV Park on the Northeast side...closer to Randolph AFB. I'm not sure about the prices there as we were there for a rally and had special pricing. But according to their website, they are reasonable at least.

So, as robcsatx says, it depends on where you want to hang out, or where you will be visiting while you're here. Hope this helps. If you have any specific questions about these places, let me know. I have pictures of at least Admiralty and Stone Creek...not sure about Lackland.

Thanks guys! We are coming in from Austin and going to be there a few days. Then headed toward Houston. I guess we want to see the popular sites, Alamo, Riverwalk, etc. So I guess I'm not sure where to stay. Have not been to San Antonio since 1970. Was at Randolph when I came off active duty.

Well then, the FamCamp at Ft. Sam would probably be closest, but I can't say anything about it as I have not been there nor seen it. From any of the other places, it wouldn't be too terrible a drive in, with the exception of Stone Creek. That one may be a bit of a hassle. Lackland would be closest of those left. But from either Admiralty or Blazing Star it's not so terribly far either. So I guess it's probably up to how much you want to pay. Lackland is definitely the cheapest of them all.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Chief, I have to agree with EdJunior, from what you posted I would have to say Ft. Sam Houston would be a good pick. Like EdJ I can not provide any intel on the Famcamp or the logistics on how to get there...best entry gate etc. To make a correction you can get to the Lackland AFB Famcamp from the gate next to Wilford Hall hospital off W. Military Drive but you must exit base from the gate EdJ mentioned between Lackland and Old Kelly which puts you on Hwy 90. It's been about a year since I camped there so a call wouldn't hurt just to verify.
