Hi Everyone - Newbies from SW Ontario

Hi there,

We bought a Rockwood 1940LTD tent trailer in June and camped a number of times in it. It has the add-a-room which is awesome for the small trailer. At night all the fishing gear and other stuff from the boat went in there. However we did find it a lot of work to get everything set up after a long drive.

We got faster each time but last time when we got to the campsite it was pouring. Fortunately we were meeting friends so went to their MH while we waited for the rain to stop. Since coming home it has rained most every day and we didn't want to put it away for the winter WET. Finally got it closed down.

As we are very busy people this is just too much of a pain. Also we like to camp in Northern Ontario where even in August the nights can get quite cold and there is no hydro available. So hubby has agreed to trade up to a TT with a lot more space and if it's raining we will be set up and inside much faster.

We have almost made a deal. Spent days researching as we don't want to be trading every year so looked for one we felt would do us for years to come. We have a down payment on a new TV - a Ford F150 and this allows us to pull 8,600lb. A big difference from the 3,000 or so the Equinox will pull.

We have a ton to learn. And just reading a few posts we are well on our way thanks to the knowledgeable people here.

Welcome to the Forums.

Happy camper shopping. You should do some pricing of campers with the big, US dealers...potentially saving a lot of money.

Have you done that? What happens if you need warranty service? The dealer we're talking to is only 45 min away. We live near London. Based on that which US dealers do you suggest?

Yes, we've imported 2 campers, one from RV Wholesalers and one from RV Direct. Lots of dealers in MI too. Try getting some pricing to see what the potential savings are.

Thanks for the tip. The instant reply I got back from RVWholesalers cut the price by $3,000 and might have a few more options in.

Have you had any service issues with the unit you purchased from them? How long did/have you had it?

How easy was it crossing the border and doing the testing here (Canadian Tire?).

Thanks a lot for the info!!!!

We had a 2008 Rockwood that we purchased from RVW. Had only one warranty issue which was fixed at a local, non Rockwood dealer...I paid up front and was reimbursed by RVW. We sold it after two seasons for $1000 less than the amount we originally paid for it.

We have a 2010 Rockwood purchased from RV Direct and have camped in it for 3 seasons with no warranty issues.

I've had minor issues with both and have repaired them myself. That's my preference over taking it to a dealer regardless whether its under warranty or not...if it needed parts, I had them ship them and I installed. That's my alternative to shoddy, untimely repairs at a dealer. If you want a dealer to fix everything that may go wrong with the camper, buying locally at a reputable dealer is probably your best option.

Crossing the border and RIV inspection at CTC were non-events. Both are very familiar with the process of importing campers and are very helpful.

You can use the search function on the forum for more information. Try 'importing into Canada', 'RVW', 'RV Direct' or other US dealers.

You'll find lots of US dealers willing to discount 30 - 35% off MSRP where Canadian dealers seem more in the 10 - 15% discount off list.

Good luck with your search...

Dave

Hi Dave and thanks. We are quite capable of small repairs, most electrical and plumbing. Won't touch the propane but that's not that likely to have an issue I expect. RVWholesalers has the unit we want. RVDirect does not handle Puma. Will keep researching. Thank you so much for the tip. I had seen these guys but was reluctant to deal with them until your post. I will let you know what happens.

Heather and Jim, glad to be of help. Try Terry Town in MI for comparison and other MI dealers. I'm pretty sure you don't have to pay state tax in MI but check when you're pricing. I didn't find RVW to be the lowest price for Rockwood back in 2010, in fact they were the highest of the 4 quotes we got.
