i would be interested in how you are going down .. i dont live far from you .. relatively speaking ... and plan to visit Pensicola Fl., Nashville and Memphis.
My biggest concern avoiding snow squalls and the like ...
We travel with our dog all the time ... and check online for campgrounds and hotels that accept both us and the pet.
Welcome fellow Ontarian ..

If I was heading to Texas from Dryden I would stay in motels till the weather got warmer and could find CG open.

D-mo to head south from Ottawa I would take the 416 to 401west and cross over at Ivy lea. Then take 81 south to you will start to find CG open in southern Pen. You might have a problem with snow on 81 at Watertown to Syracuse. The mountains in Penn. can be snow covered or worst freezing rain. You will have to plan your trip by watching the weather before leaving.

I've done the I-81 during both the summer and winter... summer to South Carolina, and during the winter to Syracuse for some shopping trips.
My main concern is the snow that blows in off the great lakes.
What I was thinking of doing was driving all the way down and crossing at Detroit, then heading down the I-75 this way we are ahead of the great lakes ...to avoid all the weather. Our first camping stop will be around Memphis Tnn.
Obviously .. we are still in the planning stages ..

You can also get a lot of lake snow on the 401 west of Toronto. The snow squalls come off lake Huron.

Welcome to the forums Karguy.
I lived in Dryden for 10 years -left in 2008.
I still miss the area.

Good luck on your trip.

Welcome camper, Ottawa Guy...I am from windsor, ont. the weather looks good this week to travel and through the weekend enjoy (jan 13). The spots of concern on 401 to me would be woodstock to London ontario. with temps reaching 8 (or 50 degrees) all should be fine. I would take your route 401 exit detroit as well. If you hit TO from 1pm through to 6 pm take the 407 worth every penny. Happy trails.
