i have a 2012 rockwood freedom tent trailer w/winch problem

I have only had this unit since March. Motorized winch always made a catching noise when being raised or lowered. this weekend it only came down 3/4 way and then stopped. you can hear motor and it will raise up some but no sounds when switched to down. battery is OK. Any ideas on what might be problem before I fork out $$$ to repair or shoot it?
