The relevance to this conversation of round dishes and satellite 101 began with the OP asking about portable units and stating that “most” of the portable units do not receive HD DirectTv programming. Then you said this:

You do not get HD from satellite 101 at home, farm, RV, deer camp, etc. It is impossible. You are receiving HD from satellites 99 and 103. This statement needed to be corrected so the OP isn’t misguided

I didn’t say you had a round dish. The round dish has everything to do with the conversation because all of the portable units, other than the Trav’ler (which is really only as portable as your RV), use round dishes which is why they cannot receive HD signals — they all aim at satellite 101, only, which does not broadcast any HD programming. The HD programming is broadcast from satellites 99 and 103. The elliptical Slimline dish is three round dishes all in one, pointing in three different directions, so it is capable of receiving signals from three different satellites, all at the same time without moving.

If you have the skew/tilt of the elliptical Slimline dish set up properly for your geographical location, all you need to do is look for and aim at satellite 101 and the signals from the other two satellites, 99 and 103, will be received by the left and right sides of your elliptical Slimline dish with no further adjustment. If the skew/tilt is wrong, you will only receive signals from satellite 101. You can obtain a 100% signal from satellite 101, no matter what your skew/tilt is set at, but if it is not set up correctly, you will not receive signals from satellites 99 and 103. You are not receiving HD programming from satellite 101 because you have a strong signal from satellite 101 — you are receiving HD programming from satellites 99 and 103 because your skew/tilt is correct for the left and right sides of your elliptical Slimline dish. Remember; satellite 101 does not broadcast any HD programming.

Interesting...... if I ever thought about getting a satellite dish and receiver you just talked me out of it!

Guess we'll stay old school- antenna TV and a few Tom Selleck movies. I'm not a sports enthusiast so that helps!

HAHA!! I can see why you would say that. But, it’s really not as complicated as it sounds. It is a bit complicated trying to explain to people how it all works, but it’s really pretty simple if you get a grasp on how and why the system works.

If you know where you are and how to correctly use a level, a small wrench and a compass, you can be watching HD DirecTv using a standard Slimline dish and a tripod within ten minutes of getting to your campsite.

Talked to an Amazon shopper. Amazin now offers Tripod set up that is compatible with my receiver. $129. Worth the try for the cost. Am up for the challenge. Thanks for all the info.
