new from Minnesota

I just purchased my first trailer, a Forest River Cherokee Destination. The trailer is aluminum. The dealer has offered to apply a paint protective coating for a cost of $1220, stating it would provide 5 years of protection saving me the time and expense of yearly cleaning and waxing. Is this worth it?

I can clean and wax my trailer every year for less than $20 dollars bottle of wax. My time is worth something, but I still wouldn't get to $1,200 over a 5 year period.

Hope that helps,

It certainly is worth it for the dealership! Unless it is polished and you want to keep it real shiny there isn't really a need to clear coat Aluminum.

Oh, welcome to FRF. Another Minnesotan here.

Welcome from Wisconsin and congrats on your Cherokee Destination. Using your money to buy what's on TURBS list is a better idea than the protective coating your dealer is going to make a big profit on.

I fell for that trap on our current trailer, what a waste of money! It did nothing to bring out the shine or protect. So I went back to waxing it, and now it shines! Don't fall for the trap! I never will again.

I want to thank all who responded to my question about paying the dealer to have a protectant applied to my aluminum trailer. It would have been a poor investment. However, joining this forum is one of the best investments I have made for my new trailer.
